Considering how disappointing the 1DX is (for my needs), how underwhelming the 1DX samples are and the difference in price between the 1DX and the D800, I'm sure I'm not the only Canon user contemplating a switch. I just can't get over waiting 3+ years for a 1DS3 replacement and getting a low megapixel speed demon, WTH...

Canon will have to reprint all their sales literature now, or make a bunch of stickers to go over their $4,500 price tag.

No, Lars.
I would exchange 36MP against 18MP. If I would get 25K ISO instead of 6.400. At this price.
But compared to Nikonians I am still waiting for that Canon offer.

After that 24-70mm non IS twice the price desaster in lenses I am not any longer so sure, that will happen.

I guess now we'll get to see how fickle all those Nikon fanboys who claimed no one needs more than 12 megapixels really are...

It certainly looks like an interesting camera for the stuff I like to shoot, as it appears to have addressed a lot of the weaknesses that crippled the D700, but I'll reserve judgement until I see whether or not Nikon has figured out how Live View is supposed to work.

+1, 36mp does not interest me.

$616 for the U.S. battery grip

Canadians get over easy at only $429 for the grip!?

This D800 is one bad-ass camera alright. You get maybe 75% of the IQ the Leica S2 ... at 13% of the cost. What a steal that is! D800 + 14-24G lens is a dream combo for all landscape shooters.

Wake up, Canon ... we need a D800-like body and a 14-24/2.8L lens combo for under $5,000. Nikon has done it ... and so can you. I am seriously tempted to get this Nikon combo just for my landscape needs. For portrait work and wildlife I will be happy with the 5DX or 3DX.

I still remember someone over in the Nikon forum saying how stupid it was for Canon to introduce Micro Adjustment in the 1D3 - saying that they can't make cameras that focus so they create MA. I laughed. That is the best feature since AF. Shortly thereafter of course Nikon came out with it and I guess then it was a great feature.

I'd take a D800E right now. Looks great to me.

Nikon has done it again, set a new standard with D800. This camera is giong to be in short supply for many many months to come and will continue to sell for MSRP for next 2 years.

My guess is canon is going to compete on price. 5DIII will be priced around $2300 +/- 300 and will have the same sensor as 1DX. At this point, it would need to have 1 distinguishing feature in it (just as the 5D & 5DII did). I am at loss as to what it may be but my guesses would include:

1) In body IS
2) 1Dx AF

We shall find out soon enough

If you look at the specs, you activate 1.2 crop for 25MP and 1.5 crop for 15MP,

That, or just choose a smaller resolution. It's simple.

Really impressive. My wife would love this camera... she likes here 1DsMKIII, but it's big. I just hope the 5D is 90% of this camera.

I would think about moving, but most of the time I'm shooting wildlife these days and I think I'd rather have a 8.5 lb 600 f4 than an 11 lb version. I think the new 24-70 is nice - it's 150g lighter than the old version (although I am still thinking about just moving to a 24-105). I guess we'll see what the Canon response is in a couple of weeks.

I guess nobody noticed the noise on the ISO640 image which seems to be worse than Canon's ISO 1600 sample of 1Dx...

Have you upsized the Canon image so that they can be compared

Not only that, but please realize Nikon used NX 2 for these conversions, if Dmitri is speaking of the ISO640 Nikon sample.

NX 2 is pretty good software, but the noise reduction performance is very poor.
I would wait until some LR 4 images can be evaluated.

I downsized the Nikon's! Why would I ever upsize the Canon's file!!! It's not its native resolution!

Ideally, an image should be compared AS IS. 100% crop is 100% crop.
When 5DII came out and some photographers said that the IQ of it is worse than the original. A few said that to compare those 2 camera one must upsize the original 5D files to the 5DII. That's just wrong!! Sharpness and ISO must be compared on 100% crops, the way I see it. No down/upsizing

No, you need to compare at the same 'print' size. Viewing 100% crops normalizes the DPI, not the print size. At 100% on the Nikon you're looking at the equivalent of a MUCH larger print than the 100% of the Canon.

You can get an accurate representation looking at 100% crops once you size the Nikon to the same size as the Canon, though.

I wrote upsize the Canon, NOT Nikon like you wrote in your reply.
You can't compare them at their own 100% AS IS in your reply. Not if you like a fair and realistic result.
It's not even really fair to downsize the Nikon. Nobody buy a 36MP camera to downsize every image

And D4 booking cancellations ... and the migration of 5D II shooters. I am waiting to see how Canon is going to respond with the 5DX/5D III before I place my order for the D800 and 14-24G ... a dream combo for any landscape photographer.

You must up-size and compare them at the same print size
