Thank you, Jeffery......500 f/4 is a very very good BIF lens despite its significant weight/bulk.
Here is one of my favourite recent shots with the lens hand-held, although not your typical birding image.

No photoshop done other than crop/reframe.

Incidentally, the one year Canon warranty on the lens expires at the end of this March.

Therefore, even if I sold you a lemon, you'd still have a chance to get it fixed by Canon under the warranty.
