Version 1.3 was announced today..

Just installed it and it wouldn't work. It wouldn't respond at all. Clicked on the icon and nothing would happen. Ran repair several times with no luck. Uninstalled and went back to 1.2.

I notified Reikan and this was their response:

" It sounds like there's definitely an issue there. Could you return to the previous version for now, but could you send me information on the operating system you're using (is it Windows XP or Windows 7 or something else?).

Many thanks and sorry for the problem.

Kind regards

Rich"

I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

Honestly, the software is good enough and I'm impressed enough with his effort to write this, I don't mind paying retail for the upgrade. I like 7D so much more with FoCal - saves me a bunch of $$ over a 1D series, ya know?

(it's like 30 GBP versus 20, so not a big deal anyway)

It would not update for me until I uninstalled the previous version.
Went smooth as silk after that....

I updated to 1.2.2 from 1.2.0.7 with no difficulty then updated to 1.3 and my software wont open. So I removed 1.3 and restarted 1. 2 .2 with no difficulty.

is 1.3 for Nikon users only?

My system is windows 7 64bit

Nope it's not....
You need to uninstall everything and do a new download of 1.3 and it should work fine.

+1: Correct, I made the same experience. A complete uninstall of the older version is required otherwise 1.3 does not work. It is not documented in the manual, so I assume it is a tiny bug.

Rich posted some comments on a couple of 1.3 bugs and is working on another update....

Thanks - I observed the issue with the center point, too. Rebooting didn't fix it. I had to select the program option to use multiple focus points, then it worked perfectly fine just by using the center focus.

I just got an email from Rich at FoCal and the latest update, FoCal 1.3.1, has corrected the problem..........

QUOTE - With version 1.3.0 you *do* have to do a complete uninstall otherwise FoCal 1.3 does not work properly.

This issue has been fixed in FoCal 1.3.1 which was released within the past hour, and you can get it through the License Management System at www.fo-cal.co.uk/lms

p.8 #15 · FoCal MA Tool

I bought FoCal a couple of months ago, but finally found some time last week and installed it (after downloading the latest update), printed out the target, and ran a dozen lenses (with and without 1.4x and 2x TCs on a few of them) through 3 bodies (7D, 5D2, 1D3).

I've used LensAlign several times in the past, but overall I preferred the automated process with FoCal.

A few steps in the interface seemed a little more clicky than required, especially when changing lenses or swapping bodies and restarting the next test. But I liked the way it presented the before (either 0 or the settings I'd entered if I'd previously done the MA manually) and after comparison.

At the end of the test when it showed the center of the target compared to the pre-test, most were visually obvious, and most of the results were consistent with the results that I'd gotten through my previous LensAlign tests. A few of the results were hard to tell the difference between the before and after values. But based on the other results, I had confidence in keeping the suggested correction, especially watching the predicted range narrow down during the test (halfway through the test a green zone narrows down from -20 to +20 as the test progresses, narrowing down as the test progresses until it narrows down to a single recommended setting).

And after shooting a lacrosse and baseball game, I'm very happy with the results. Shot after shot I was impressed with the focus being spot on. I pixel peep my final selections at 100% and the keeper rate was definitely improved.

Thumbs up.

I think that the documentation should be accompanied by a Quick Start guide. Maybe someone else has already done one, but if not, I'll try to create a one page series of installation/setup steps and screenshots. Little things like change camera to One Shot, Av wide open, select center point focus, turn off surrounding focus points before connecting the USB cable... all of that's in the documentation, but buried and scattered throughout too many pages.

On Twitter yesterday they said they are working on version 1.5 with lots of new features so looking forward to that.

I've been impressed with it so far.

1.4 is available - includes 5D mark III and Nikon D800 I think.
Have not tested new version but found ealier version to solve some of my problems, at my age one needs all the help you can get.

I agree. The documentation is pretty bothersome to get through especially since it consists of two independent document files which should better be in one. A quick start guide would be very helpful - every new user of this program I know is confused which steps to do first, here the program could be much improved, too.
