I did use the larger target with the both the 300 lenses. Using a sturdy tripod + large ball head (kirk BH1). I will repeat tests tomorrow if it still fails, then will talk with the developer and possibly send the camera + lens into canon. Given both the 300s are having similar issues, I am inclined to think something is wrong with my technique or the camera A/F needs adjustment by canon. Mike Pearson wrote:
Strange. My 300 f2.8 IS I was the smoothest run of any of my lenses (very consistent focus) . I did it on a 1D MK IV. The only thing I can think of is, did you use the larger target? I switched to the larger target for that lens.
are you 15 meters from the target? also is your target priority set to normal? If its not, thats the issue I had and works fine now.

The s/w if unable to get consistent A/F on either of my two 300 mm lenses ( 300 F4 IS & 300 f2.8 IS I). I am using 5 sec MLU, printed on high quality plain paper, testing outside and yet its failed twice. Anyone use this with 5D II & 300 f2.8 IS I successfully? I am going to try again tomorrow morning with bright sun (today was overcast but still plenty of light) and then raise an issue with the developer
At 15 meters and shallow DOF, setting up the sensor and target planes as parallel as possible can play a role. If you are doing it outside on what appears to be flat ground, there may be differences of elevation that aren't so perceptible, so you may be at an angle to the target vertically or horizontally enough to throw off the Focal analysis.
I used the small target for up to 400mm and it worked better than the large one. Using the small target and the target alignment tool, try to see if you can get a green check on zoom. It can be finicky as hell, but that may be the trick.
That appeared to have been the main issue. I tried the test indoors using a lamp and while it struggled at a few MA positions, it did complete the test for both the 300s + extenders. Overall now the system seems to be working, will verify again once we have sunny days to see if a trip to canon is needed for the body. Thx for the suggestions on the smaller target also, will try it tomorrow.

obvious question but you did turn the IS off right? If not thats the issue for sure. Also focus mode has to be in "one shot", center point mode.
I did turn off the IS , with one shot mode center point. The target was likely the issue but now it appears be working. Will try with my other lenses tomorrow. Thank you for your help.
Has anyone had a camera body added to their license? Any idea how long it takes Reikan to respond to those types of requests?? My new 7D reefer is here and I'm champing at the bit to get it MA'd.
