Here we go again.
In effect, much of N. America as well as Europe are in the claws of winter. Therefore, your winter theme pictures are sought. What is important is that each image is accompanied by ID of the gear used. Furthermore, any additional notes on photography techniques will be very appreciated. We gotta remember, this is a Canon gear forum after all.
For me,winter shooting means a struggle with low light and dificulties in finding half decent background. Then there is snow, ice and freezing temperatures. However, we've got to work with what we've got.
These two shots illustrate rather well the wretched light and background of today's shooting session. Although one of the most capable low-light combos was used, i.e., 1DsMkII + 200 f/2 IS, auto focussing was quite difficult on in-flight targets. Out of some 30 head-on flight shots attempted, only one was in focus......the camera just couldn't compute AF fast enough.
I sure hope 1DX will help me in that regard, otherwise I wouldn't need it, especially at its $7,000 price sticker.
I will not take a winter photo before 10:30 EST Dec. 22, 2011. However, I will not delay complimenting you for the lovely expression and body language of your wintry rock dove.

Thank you, Jess ...I've taken many BIF shots even worse looking than that.
Hey, no point in trying to follow the calendar.......I've been wearing my winter clothing several weeks now.
Here's another shot from today, not a leaf left on those trees, and background colours range from grey to insipid brown.
One more from last year - also taken with the S95. I love this little thing. The image was taken through the window at my work, using the ice on the window as a filter of some kind. Heck, I just thought it was neat.
You know, i believe the point of this kind of thread is to show THIS SEASON pictures.
Not the ones we took last year of the year before. Go out and shoot more guys!
5D, 17mm, some GND filters, 3x pano. Very very cloudy day.
We are off to a good start, thank you all for sharing your fine pictures.
I am particularly intrigued by Safcraft's harbour scene.....at a first glance I thought I was looking at an old copperplate gravure.
Perhaps Safcraft can tell us more about the town as well as those barrel laden boats....what is that we are looking at ?

By all means Peter, this is my home town "Porto". Famous for its wine, that comes from the vineyards spread up along the river "Douro" making a beautiful landscape. The grapes are carried down the river to the city by the sea (Porto) where the wine is made and put to rest in the cellars. Some for over 40 years, depending on the quality of the grapes.
Those barrels you see are full of wine ready to be transported to destination.
Of course this story was true 100 years ago, now the boats are just there for decoration and turist purposes, the grapes come in trucks and the wine goes out bottled and priced . But hey...more romance in the first version.
This little Bufflehead duck (a drake and a hen) is a winter visitor in our parts. In early spring they move further up north to their breeding grounds.
Pay attention to the drake's bill. That is its true colour. If you see it pink or beige on a picture, that would mean that excessive photoshopping has gone awry. The head plumage irridescence is not easy to photograph because it depends on the sunlight incidence angle as well as intensity. Much of the time those dark head feathers appear near-black.
