I have a couple of Gordy's straps, no wrist pad. They do soften with use. Work them with your hands while watching a hockey game and they'll be much improved before you use them. Inexpensive.

I'd like to point to my G21 tests from the other thread

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1070774/3#10204299

In my opinion this lens is very usable on Nex-5N and a cheaper and smaller alternative to the ZM 21.

Has anybody directly compared the SEL 18-55 @24mm to the Sony-Zeiss 24 at equivalent apertures? How does the kit lens stack up against the expensive prime when shooting at distances?

I've been surprised by how well the 18-55 does at or around 24mm, I haven't seen these two compared side by side, so I'm a little curious...

So when I posted last..I was still quite confused about some comments in this thread that the Zeiss 25mm ZM was percieved as a bad lens on Nex by some and pretty good by others.

I broke down and bought one, and at least on my 5N with a Metabones adapter it is a stunning performer. No corner smearing or tint, and the sharpness and color are equal to or slightly better than the 25mm ZF, I would say sharpness is the same, but contrast is slightly higher on ZM

SO... ZF is better for close focus, and more versatile in that it can be used on Nex 5N, 7, EOS, and Nikon. The ZM is smaller, lighter and slightly wider angle being a true 25mm whereas the ZF is actually 26.5mm

Since I can't justify keeping both I am selling the ZF, but I suspect I will miss it.

Pictures are in 25mm ZF vesres ZM question thread if intereted

TY Bill.

The concensus has been that the ZM is good on the 5n---shaprer at infinity than the 24/1.8, but not the 'sharpest lens on earth' it is on 135.

Philber's connections imply the leica 24/3.8 ASPH is a step up on the 5n, and I suspect the 28 summicron is also ahead---it has some of the sharpest edges I've seen over 5.6 on RF wides. But as the nice glacier shots above show the zm 25 is good--though the 21/4.5 was maybe even better, except for shifting colors.

I hope you post some shots here also

Hi, Bill. I'm glad the ZM 25 is working for you. I've been under the impression that the lens was fine at f5.6 or f8. It's the wider apertures that were of concern. Is your 25 sharp on NEX at the corners at wide apertures, too?

keeping the thread alive --

Here'my situation : NEX 5n
I have a CV 15 and a CV 35 f1.2, both of which I am going to keep. But I need a lens in the 24-28 range that would be my primary walk around lens. Sadly, I want it to do everything - I'd like it ito be at least moderately fast, good for dim indoor churches, outside cityscapes, nature and landscapes. Oh, and relatively small would be great. I know.......

I also have a ZF 21, a ZA 24 e mount, and a ZM 35 C, all of which I am considering selling. The ZF 21 is unbelievably fantastic, but just way too big to stay on my camera all the time. It is so hard to consider selling it, though I want to sell the ZA 21 for sure. The ZM 35 is not getting used because of the CV 35, which I like better.

If I sell all 3, I'd have about $3,000 to use. 28 summicron is too expensive. I'm considering a ZM 18 plus a 28 elmarit (either the 4th pre-asph or the asph) or (to save some money for other things like a GXR) a CV 28 ultron. Maybe I don't need the ZM 18?

So I would welcome all opinions!

I think within about 10 minutes, Charlie (Uhoh7) is going to point out to you that you can get a used minty 28 Summicron within your $3k budget or less.

The first tip I got was the Contax G 28/2.8 which I actually bought before the camera. It then made me go G45 and G90 as well. I have a set of other lenses - not focused through a cheap Chinese adapter - and honestly I cant tell any significant difference in focusing speed. The main difference is that the G's are smaller and produce better IQ than just about anything. They're also dirt cheap compared to any other high quality option.

So that would be my tip, same as the first I got from here

EDIT: but forget dim churches. Either you buy lenses for the price of small cars - or bring your favorite brand FF and get something for far less, top class lens including body. AF could be included, but there's no Leitz or Leica printed anywhere

I've got the G45 and 90 and adore both. But if I get a GXR in addition to the Nex, I'd like a lens that I could use on both. I could convert the Gs to M mount but it is really expensive. Maybe still a bargain even with the conversion?

Churches -- such difficult light... .

Jeff - I'd like Charlie to weigh in, too .

If you want a 28, I'd probably sell everything and go with the Leica...or you could just take a step backwards while using one of your 35s. I'm kidding, 28mm is a nice focal length on aps-c. IMO, the 28 Ultron is bit of an unknown on NEX, as there aren't tons of comparisons with that lens, but who knows, maybe you should give it a shot?

FWIW, I'm staying firmly with the CV 15/4.5, ZM 35/2, ZM 50/1.5 and Contax G90. I'd probably like the ZM 18's IQ a little better than the CV, but the size and price are enough to keep me away, as well as the difference in focal length. I think I'm to the point that, while I'm using aps-c, my lineup is about as good as I'd like/need. I'll soon be selling CV 35/1.4, CV 50/2.5, CV 50/1.5, CV 85/4.5, Contax G 35, and the ZM 35/2.8.

Questions:

To Partitura... What is it about the CV 35 (which one?) you like better than the Zeiss 35mmc ZM?

To Douglasf13... Can you explain you preference for ZM 35 f2 verses 2.8 and Your preference for ZM 50mm f1.5 vveres either the CV 1.5 or 2.5? Any thought on 50mm ZM 2.0 verses the above?

To all: Anyone using G series 35-70mm f3.5-5.6? I have a Contax 35-70mm f3.4. Hove much of a downgrade in IQ to go to the G series besides the obvious f5.6 issue? Best adapter for thsi puppy?

To All: Contax 45mm G series verse the 50mm ZM f2.0? any thoughts?

I like the CV 35 1.2 because of the speed . Also, I like its rendering both at wide open, and stopped down. I know the ZM 35C is a really good lens, and I'd like very much to keep it, but since it duplicates the 35mm focal length, I'm thinking that I might have a better use for the funds I have invested in it.

Back when I was shooting FF, my 35mm was on the camera more than anything else. That's why I'm eager to find a 35mm equivalent on the Nex. I was hoping it would be the ZA24 e mount but that hasn't panned out for me.

Howdy, Bill. Here's my take on the 5N.

- ZM 35/2 vs. 35/2.8: I love the size of the 35/2.8, and it possibly has better bokeh, but the 35/2 is faster, sharper in the center and corners (except for maybe the center at f2.8,) and it vignettes quite a bit less at just about all apertures. Also, the 35/2.8 has a narrower view than the 35/2. It's a bit more like a 37mm, or something.

- ZM 50/1.5 vs. CV 50/1.5: The CV seems a little sharper in the center until at least f2.8, but the ZM is better at the edges at most apertures (at least at shorter focus distances.) The ZM is a great size, and, at the risk of saying such a thing, it's got that Sonnar "look," if that means anything. I like using the ZM 35/2 and 50/1.5, because they're a nice one-two punch in different vibes. Honestly, I'm finding myself wanting to walk around with the 50/1.5 the most, lately.

p.s. I haven't used the CV 50/2.5 enough to comment on it. It seems fine.

Thanks to both of you, and I hope I am awake and on line when you list your lenses.

I have the CV15, and the 25mm ZM. Now looking for a 35, 45- 50mm and 75 to round it out, or the Contax G 35-70 if it has even 2/3rds of the IQ of the the 35-70mm f3.4 that might fit the bill.

I am landscape and not people so f5.6-8 is th enorm for me

Thanks again
Bill

As the Zeiss data suggests, the G 35-70mm needs to stop down to 8 or so to be pretty good. It does not seem to match the CY wide open. The rear lens gets pretty close to the sensor at 35mm so there are probably some corner issues to boot. But it is a lovely size and with enough light does a nice job.

Back on pg. 8 of this thread Sam Waldron did a quicky test with the 28 f/2 Ultron:

billsnature, the MTF charts say it all, IQ is overall a bit better with the G. This lens, of which few were sold but they are around, was near the top of my list before I realised I need the D21mm too much on FF, and would not be happy with the CV or Samyang on crop NEX.

For what we do (f5.6-f8), it is sure to be a wonderful small package, can you believe 290 grams for a zoom? Better than the CY in the image centre (always a good guide) with a steady drop-off (the other part that counts) with flat lines not too far apart at f8, all at a very high level of contrast - especially on the APS-C frame, and best at 35mm. Ultra low distortion where you need it, at the short end, still not bad pincushion at the long end. Gives you a 50-105mm range eq on FF. I would buy with confidence if that suits.

Usual caveats apply: good copy, good adapter, etc. If they ever produce a FF Sony anything that takes the G lenses, I'll be in like Flynn. Good luck.

Though it may cause apoplexy, if I were you I would get a 28 ultron, either one. I'm convinced it's a very nice lens on the 5n, though others are not. Either way you can't go wrong, because they will sell in 10 minutes if you don't like it.

The contax 28 looks great---if you can stand half the light of an ultron.

You have other options, but it's daylight only unless you get the sony zeiss, an SLR, or spend alot.

You may see bad ultron samples--they mean nothing. You know a bad shot can come from any lens. I looked hard and found very nice ones, and also very happy ultron/nex owners.

I think you will be shocked at how well it does. If not, you can settle the issue once and for all and put me in my place
