Well, the hope is that Canon realized their customers have been complaining about the crappy AF in their non 1-series bodies and so this latest AF system in the 1D X raises the bar high enough that there's room for an impressive, full-featured, yet economical AF system for the 5D-series that does not steal the 1D X's thunder. That's my thinking, though of course there's no way to know until Canon announces a successor to the 5D2.

As for build quality, the 5D2 build is reasonably good. It's not 1-series, of course, but it's not such a huge issue that it's a dealbreaker for most people in that market segment. So I don't know why you think that it's critical for the next 5D-series body to be more robust. If anything, it's their lenses that need to be built stronger, not the bodies.

So why don't you just GTFO out and shoot Nikon already, if you hate Canon so much? Or do you just enjoy trolling the forums?

There are plenty of photographers out there who will be left craving a very high res DSLR. 1Ds or not, I can't see Canon giving up in this respect.

I guess the number of working pro's that find 21mp acceptable and 18mp too low will shift to D3x or 645D/S2/H4d.

Though this may resolve more detail more often (through cleaner files) than a 1Ds3 could.

Late to the party... interesting release. Thank God Canon isn't pursuing the pixel race with this one.

yeah this new AF system sounds so much more advanced that they well could be free to even just plop the full on 1D4 AF into 5 series perhaps

yeah that is true, but perhaps for DR at least where the canon dslr have lots and lots of room to grow since the A/D and such is adding lots of noise and banding after the fact

I never said I hated anything, if fact I love Canon and that's why I shoot it. In fact I love everything about the new body, except for the price and size of course. I'm into value and more compact bodies. There's nothing wrong with accepting the competition has something that we do not have....yet. I'm still hoping for the 3D or whatever is going to compete with the D700/D800.

Where is Canon going with this? Combining the speed of the 1D series and the FF sensor of the 1Ds series. End of both series perhaps? I mean, what is the advantage of the 1D series after this... apart from the 1.3x sensor for reach maybe. FF sensor will be cleaner at higher ISO's anyway. It seems like they are trying to combat the excellent FF / speedy Nikon bodies (like the D700/D3 series) with this one.

Actually, if you read correctly, it states the 1DX has replaced the 1DIV and the 1DsIII and is the re-invention of the 1D and 1Ds lines NOT the merging 1D and 1Ds lines.

From the official press-telease on Canon USA:

"... the EOS-1D X will be a high-speed multimedia juggernaut replacing both the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark IV models in Canon's lineup."

Technically, the word "merge" has not bein used.
However, it should be quite obvious that the 1D-X is the successor to both the 1DsIII and the 1DIV.

Yes. This kills the two older lines.Sounds like a fully intentional move by canon to have one flagship do it all pro body.

Right... I pity people who just bought a 1D4.

Maybe Canon still is working on a very high pixel FF camera as well? 1D-Xs?

Anyway, smart move from Canon. This is going to sell big time.

one funny thing is i believe the press releases for the last few lenses said they were designed to meet the new ever higher density sensors
and then the new higher density sensor is lower

I can certainly understand why you would think that. I am inclined to agree but they're certainly not giving any reassuring signs in that regard at the moment.

I am not so sure Canon totally gives up it's high pixel ambitions.

My post was not addressed to you.

Look, I don't understand why people are bringing up a hypothetical D800 and comparing it to this 1D X. They're not for the same target audience, folks. The 1D X is the next flagship EOS body. The D800, whatever it's going to be, isn't going to be Nikon's flagship. So complaining that the 1D X is too expensive or too bulky doesn't make sense. You can be assured that Canon will offer a successor to the 5D2; we just don't know what it will be.

We don't even know what a D800 will have, and yet people are talking about it as if it's the Next Coming. It's baffling how we've got so much interest in an unannounced camera whose predecessor was a 12 MP body and how it's being compared to a $6800 pro-level, top-of-the-line DSLR.
