I think this is the big question. Will the overall iq of the 7 exceed or even equal that of the 5n (which appears to be exceptional).
Indeed. I'm eagerly waiting nex-7 samples and comparisons with the 5n.
I concur with FlyPenFly. For my NEX 5 I bought a really cheap and light Cullmann tripod. Sure, I couldn't do 30 sec exposures, but it is fine for at least 2 sec. It is also light enough that I can take it with me without duress, and small enough that I have been permitted to deploy it where my larger kit would have most certainly been disallowed.

NEX with tripod? Ouch. Why buy small and light camera and lenses only to make it heavier and more cumbersome? YMMV of course but don't like that mix.
Happy shooting,

If it's your only camera, I can see using a lightweight tripod for some scenarios.
I have a small gorilla-pod I kept that I used with the 5, and will use on the 7. I put it to quite a bit of use on the road paired with a third-party remote. High-ISO enabled handheld shooting is great if you have to use it, but if you can use a pod and your subject works with a slower exposure, the rewards over using a higher ISO are, in my opinion, worth it.
Small / lightweight can have an abundance of purposes, especially if a gorilla pod can hold up the combo you're using.
I love to mountain bike. Once I made the mistake of doing a hard mud trail with my heavy cheap bike, D700, full lens assembly (16-35, bigma, 100 mm macro Vivitar, 50mm f/1.8) and my heavy-ass 055XPROB and Cullman head. Talk about a workout! (I had strapped the tripod underneath the bike's frame rail - barely worked.
Something like a NEX 5N that I have coming in and a small gorilla pod would be awesome for when I get back into biking (hey, I like to take self-portraits that are silly - tripods are essential for this!)
NEX 7 samples? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? w/ 50/1.8oss
Claims to have used a NEX 7, 3 small pics without exif,
says he posted full size on flickr, but I only see a65, a77, 5n, m9 pics.

Apologies but I don't understand this phrase. Can you elaborate please?
Happy shooting,

The VF assembly looks awfully flimsy, especially if the cohesion is anything like the one between my wife's NEX3 and flash unit. One wrong motion and you'll end up breaking something away, or so I fear.
Then again, I may be completely wrong because after all I'm a self professed luddite who is burning through gear like you wouldn't believe...
I really don't care that much about ISO quality above 800 to be honest. I never end up shooting that high and if I'm shooting at night, use a damn tripod.

The perfect tripod for NEX and m4/3 is the SIRUI T-1205X. It's 800g, 34 cm folded without a ballhead and 40 cm with. It can carry a maximum of 10kg, has a max height without extending the center column of 124.5 cm and sells for around $300 (including ballhead).

My lightweight minimal tripod is the Gitzo GT1541 (1.1 Kg. 159cm). I had the gorillapod but didn't find much use for it. Way too short.

Got it. Well, I must confess I can not judge flimsiness by pictures alone.
I'm judging rather from the experience with the addon flash. It's a PITA to attach, and feels like it can come off at any moment. That's why a proper Minolta type flash shoe on NEX-7 looks much more appealing to me. I've used a Minolta digital SLR system in the past, including a couple of flashes, and the better of the two (5600HS or something) was great, 3600 not so much because the head could not be turned sideways (kind of a bummer because Canon's 430EX has this). It seemed pretty durable as well (though I like Canon's metal shoe better).
An external mic jack is another plus, else you'd have to choose to use EITHER flash, or VF, or microphone, but not any 2 together.

Whoa... the NEX 5N looks WAY cleaner at high ISOs. Here's ISO 1600 in RAW compared:
Unfortunately, it's not just at high ISO's. Even at ISO 200, it's clear the APS 24MP sensor in the a77 is noisy. You can really see this if you look at the gray scale section of the color checker chart.
