Bif, I posted some on the NEX thread. Here you have them. All of the Yashica ML 21/3,5 on the NEX 5N:

BTW Peire,

I'm always surprised that people who have your same basic description don't try zooms. Some older 100-300mm, 4.5 or 5.6 at 300mm, under $100, zooms kick total butt on primes of $700 and under! (IQ Wise). They're often MUCH lighter and typically smaller too!

IMO at 300mm only the mammoth primes are better than such zooms. Like the Canon 300/2.8 L for example. It's massive but at that point it's rock'n! Most of the f/4.5 and slower primes suffer from CA and are only about the same sharpness as the zooms like I mentioned above. The Zooms I'm talking about have no such CA or fringing in comparison. I dunno why people here seem to be stuck on primes for everything. Sometimes at some price-points, zooms are just better.

Wow! I'm impressed on your images wide open! My copy sucks badly at 3,5… I need f5,6 or, preferably, f8 to clean the image up. By then, though, it's bittingly sharp. I'm actually surprised at the change. i compared it to the NEX kit lens, which is supposedly at its best at that focal length and the Yashica was much much worse wide open, but at f8 it was like I took a veil out of the image when I used the ML21… As I said, strange…

Really? Man that sucks! Why do I keep getting these "extra good" lenses??

For this copy it's the same sharpness at 3.5 as it is at 5.6 - only a tad different in global contrast. At f/8 it gains some sharpness but it was already so sharp at 3.5 ~ 5.6 the only reason to use f/8 would be DOF.

If focuses to something like 11 inches... and at that point the field curvature is so tight that the non-center areas are OOF. This is as it is with all WA CF lenses I believe tho... right?

It almost completely lacks any CA or fringing!

So far I've only captured 64 scenes (bracketed 3x = 196 shots) with it so I'm still learning a bit.

Of the first four I posted - those are all wide open too - except the flashed bird... And that's at f/11 or f/8 I think. As you can see there's not much difference between the 100% crops of the bird at f/8 / f/11 and the flower at f/3.5.

I imagine this lens as with most UWA lenses, would be incredibly difficult to focus manually without the live-view zooming tho. Also I think I noticed that it focus shifts quite a bit between 3.5 and 5.6. I'll have to confirm it if you're interested in that point tho... as I only think I noticed it.

As you can see, I use a Sony NEX 5N, so it's really a liveview camera… I think it wasn't my lack of ability in focusing… In fact, I was trying at infinity. However, seeing your results, I'll try again and see if it was operator error…
Thanks for replying,

Xavier

Sure. But don't think I was suggesting it was operator error or an inability of some sort. I was just commenting generally - things I thought of to say about the lens as I've used it so far.

That's one thing which I think has stood out from among all the other acquired knowledge I've gained while here at this site; everyone has a different skill-set and style. In my case for example there's just no way i could MF using an LCD while others do it NP without even considering it. So I've learned to make as few assumptions as possible: weather or not you have the EVF for it, weather or not your eyes are good enough to use the LCD directly, weather these were tripod or hand-held, etc. etc. I just try not to assume anything. Hehehe and even then I still get it wrong a lot.

I had a 21 ML a long time ago, shooting E6 at the time. Again, poor wide open, much better one click down (F4) but killer sharp at 5.6- maybe 11. I never paid attention to the corners so not really sure how it was there.

When evaluating sharpness, I take care to avoid infinity because that is more a test of mount/adapter calibration. The exception is a telephoto designed to focus beyond infinity. As always, bracketing is a must, especially to detect field curvature.

With the field curvature of this 21mm and others like it I can see it directly in the EVF - it's pretty obvious at close focus. Additionally with infinity focus and the EVF set 15x MF assist it's a piece of cake to see if it + adapter is reaching infinity correctly so I don't worry about that. It either does or it doesn't. I think I have one or two Sigmas in OM mount that don't while all others do NP. Pretty much all of my 350 lenses can focus past the moon so...

To clarify a bit further on the "sharpness" of this lens wide open there seems to be two different attributes that happen to lenses at their widest apertures. One is sharpness and the other I call global contrast. Sharpness for me is defined and detected by the presence of fine line and edge details as well as the area definition within minute patters like stucco, wood-grain, paper fibers, etc. The smaller these details are the closer to "micro-contrast" the attributes one is seeing are.

Global contrast is different to me. A given lens may be razor sharp wide open but suffer from low global contrast. The condition looks exactly like someone moving the ACR "Contrast Slider" in the negative direction on an otherwise perfect image. The sharpness and definition of the smaller detail is (or can be) all still there but the image overall looks ever so slightly washed. I can know when a lens has this yet is still to be considered sharp by either adjusting the Contrast slider in ACR up a little or by increasing the small detail via sharpening or another plug-in that does such things. And of course just by examining the image close up too.

A lens that is not sharp can not render those small details and no amount of contrast adjustment, sharpening, or detail enhancement can recover it. Ya can't recover something that isn't there after all.

So with those definitions in mind (semantically correct or not) this ML 21/3.5 is very sharp wide open but lacks just a tiny bit of global contrast. One click-stop (f/4 ?) clears all of that up and the sharpness remains the same from 3.5 to 5.6. At f/8 there is some additional sharpness added but one needs to look at the 100% pixels to see it. That extra bit of sharpness isn't noticed at all for images like we've posted here - at 1000 to 1300 pixels across.

This also fits the description of the ML 24/2.8 as well but with just a little bit better GC at it's widest aperture.

Bif, don't worry. I didn't take it as a go at me. I was thinking aloud that it might be operator error. In fact, when I tested it wide open, I decided it sucked and I'm only using it at 5,6 or 8. However, you're showing that it just needs a little ps to get an amazing image and that encourages me to try again (when I have time), so thanks!

EDIT: I've cleared up the grammar of the sentence because it didn't make sense before. I guess it was too early for me

Sure NP. It's just that I keep running into people saying some particular lens or another "sucks" or whatever and then when I find that it actually doesn't I'm told that I Have a superior copy and that it still sucks anyway... Pooh!!!

I'm starting to think it's a conspiracy or something... They're following me... Ahhh!

And... it's going back home to it's papa this morning. It was sure nice to play with. I got about 300 images (120 shots, 30 keepers) out of it!

Nice! That's more than many others I've had longer!

Salute to the lender! Very gracious!
