Are all leafy greens that muted colour in real life, or is it an in-camera effect due to UV etc.? Is it possible to capture bright summer greens as we see them in Europe?

I wish!!!!! Effectively, this is how the leafy greens look like in real life. Not sure if it's due to the tree species, pollution, or the weather conditions.

Being a nature photographer is very tough in SE Asia

I concur with Edward - this is how the leafy greens look like in real life - boring dark green throughout the year.

I had no idea that greens varied that much in the world! I would have a very hard time taking landscape photos in that part of the world then. A huge part of the attraction for me is the variety of bright greens. I am less a flower person.

Carsten, it's probably due to the more intense and more hours of sunlight that the greens get darker. In Europe the greens generally get much darker too as we move from spring to summer, and as summer progresses.

You probably only get nice greens in shady spots (rain forest?) in SE Asia.

Btw, probably best to ignore Contas... he seems to live in an alternate reality.

He was already on my hide list from earlier outburst. I peek into my hidden people from time to time, and if they have calmed down I pull them out again. This will obviously take a lot more time. I am sure he is not the only one I have upset with some of my opinions, but on the other hand, they are my opinions (at least in the moment I write them), and so he can just ignore me, but he can't change me. Especially that way.

I certainly hope that you (and others) will continue with giving your own opinion. I don't always agree with these opinions, but it certainly has given me another look at things from time to time.

As long as we don't deteriorate to the Dpreview level, all discussion is very welcome to me.

Woah Woah , a whole drama here.
Sneering...shocking...regreting...rejecting and so on.
Some men here acted like street bulliers, they did it from time to time and they considered have rights to do it, until a day they met real black belt master. I have a honor taught at least 3 of "Earls " lessons. I think the RESPECT is the most they lack, so I have to gain it back, at least for myself.I received some PMs from other FMers about their unreasonable attitudes. Now it's time to change, it's the real shame if you stay there.
This is moral aspect.
Now about photography: I am waiting a landscape example at f/4.0
( I do not ask for WO either) and infinity focus and no sharpenning, contrast, colors adding to prove that my SD1 defeats your Ni..X - It will give you a lesson about judging Foveon sensor.

Yea and clarity settings tiny bit too high (darkglow edges).

You might want to switch to Iridient's RAW Developer for developing SD1M files, its does better job with it. Tho maybe disabling NR in Sigma PP5 would help too.

Nice example what can be done with Sigma. Tho I think these are stitches from SD15 or 14.

SD1M isnt bad camera, its just really hard on its users and except Iridient's RAW Developer, which creates somewhat usable (color-wise) photos theres no other way to get decent results. Colors from SD1M are currently incredibly off, cause they are mostly not profiled or profiled wrong by Sigma. Yea and that IR/UV filter which is on it doesnt help it either (it has too much magneta tint, previous in SD14 was better, there are samples of SD14 IR/UV filter used on SD1 on dpreview forums).

And ofc, its pretty much base ISO camera, unless you like banding.. (which is visible anyway even on ISO 200 in shadows..).

Right now is SD1M more "theoretical" machine, than practical.. only thing in which it could "beat" competion is resolution (if you use Zeiss/Leica lens). Otherwise no way.

If Adobe will incorporate SD1M into RAW developing, then things will be much better.. until then I would take 5DMK2/D800/Sony A900 over this every day. And probably even after that, cause even if I like shooting static things, I want to do something else too sometimes.. (like take pics at ISO 1600 or in difficult DR situations or something that needs really good AF or fast FPS.. etc.).

Thanks Mesca, those pics took in jpeg only, I intended not take RAW this time and at iso less than 400, SPP NR doesn't work.I would take only RAW in short. But what I see of SD1 is never 5D2 can gets, especially landscapes for sharp tiny details.I also took a series pics with Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX but the results seem like 5D2 ouputs.Zeiss lensT* is the most important for Foveon sensor, as I stated many times before.

contas, I have posted loads and loads and loads of landscape shots in the past, so if you want to see what I get, just do a quick search (on Google, FM's search is useless), or just look at the first pages of this thread. Secondly, you are in south-east Asia, shooting across a large body of water, and I have no comparable view here, nor any comparable amount of haze to equalize shooting conditions, nor the same quality of light.

What I can say is that if this shot is representative, someone should do a better colour profile for the SD1. These colours are shockingly lacking in green, even if you ignore the leaves, and the blues and reds are very crunchy, i.e. not subtle at all. The potential may be there in this camera, but at the moment it is not being realized.

Maybe you could shoot a colour chart and process it the same way, then I can do the same and we can compare.

Okay, here is a landscape shot from last summer, also on page 1. Sorry I don't have any infinity type stuff, there just aren't those types of vistas here, unless you drive out of the city:

You can not show the landscape at f/4 ( that means WO for my lens ) at infinity, that the extremes I set for my SD1 to see how it'll do and what it gets, and the results are far than my expectations-I even only did clarity a little , while others left as originals.I never think those are perfect ones but it opens new abilities for my creations.
You failed to prove that yours can do better .So boasting little please, and must do a respect to Foveon.
About your pic I cann't say anything, as you admited you are not good at this.
And here is my , the similar range, view, low light, untouched : that is for your analysis .

Again, your greens are dark and muted, but I don't know if that is what foliage looks like where you are. This is why I suggest something more universal, like a colour chart, or even a can of 7-Up.

Carsten, I saw that photo a while back, but it is still quite beautiful. I have not had time to post much here, but your HDR journey is quite inspiring. Hoping to post some soon.

Thanks Luka, I look forward to it! I will be posting more HDRs from another urbex tour or two in the next days, and hopefully this weekend I can get out a bit, maybe even outside of Berlin. If I get anywhere where I can see far over water, I will make a photo with my (just arrived 5 minutes ago) D800, and post it for comparison. As I mentioned though, sharpness is not what I am commenting on, but the quality of the colours, especially greens. This is what I will be showing, if I can.

carsten, i'm with you, this evening i was out shooting and light was more on the boring side, nonetheless there was a vast amount of shades of green. I don't see those in Contas' images.

Great shots, especially the first one! And yes, those show the kind of greens I was looking for in contas shots, including some on the flower thread which couldn't have been affected by haze. On the other hand, several expatriates living in Asia confirmed that the greens are darker there, hence my request for a ColorChecker or 7-Up shot.

Greens are there. One just needs to know how to work with SD1M files.. as I said, its for hardcore users. SD1M has acutally LOADs of colors.. only massaging each file in PP isnt much fun (well on other hand one thinks before publishing or taking shot ).
