Well I decided to call the helpful folks at Matthews Studio Equipment ( http://www.msegrip.com/mse.php?show=catalog ) and they came up with the following, which I think will work.
RECEIVER MOUNTING PLATE
Often used as the foundation for a monitor platform, a speaker platform or for placing product on. The plate has a 5/8” receiver for placing directly onto a Baby Stand. The plate is provided with four screw holes.

Permits a fixed 90° angle offset from any Baby Pin.

Unfortunately it is turning my relatively cheap ring light into a more expensive project, but I think it will be worth it.
