p.1 #1 · Testing EF200/2 vs. EF70-200/2,8IS Mk2 and 1.4x or 2.0x

Was a slow afternoon so had some spare time to kill. I decided I should try to do a highly non-sientific test with my two lenses EF200/2IS and the EF70-200/2,8ISMk2 plus two converters the EF1.4x II and the EF2.0x II

Two targets were used, and multiple shots were shot. Both AF and live view with 10x were tried. MLU and a not so sturdy tripod.

This is how the first target looked like

And now the test:

I am very surprised how well the new 70-200 do take the converters, especially the 2x
Still my gut feeling is that the EF200 is focusing faster and more precise.

Even if the EF200/2 is an über-performer, the new EF70-200 is not far behind, and if one do consider it is a ZOOM it is even more astonishing! Still that extra stop do come in handy

Now if someone could send me a pair of Mk3 converters I'd be happy to test

It could be my sleepy eyes or my monitor, but it seems to me that nearly if not all of the pics taken with the zoom look better...

Maybe I need to go to bed and come back tomorrow.

I just have a few more with target much further away...

And the result

Stopping down the EF200+EF2x makes it scary sharp and with lots of contrast to boot!

Indeed it does.
But what strikes me as odd is that when both are shot wide open with extenders, the zoom seems to be better.

BTW, thanks for the time and trouble you took in doing the test and sharing it with us.

Oh, well I need to do the test as I have an option to buy the EF2xMkII...

I found it hard to nail focus using LV... even if magnify 10x! The very tiniest movement of focus ring would throw it hughly out of focus, and never seemed able to improve on one shot AF.

After having pixel peeping for an hour, I am almost inclined to get the EF200 serviced, really a Zoom should not be this good compared to a fixed lens

See if I can do some more testing if the weather is cooperative.

BTW I see some odd ISO adjustment going on, looking at the EXIF I see ISO-numbers 100/125 and 200... and I KNOW I had it dialed in on 200! Could it be the live view causing this?? Never noticed this before.
