Search around for "Creative Commons" music. Artists will let you use their music royalty-free as long as you provide credit. A few still have terms limiting redistribution or commercial use, but most don't... they just want to spread their name and music to as many ears as possible.

For example, check out http://jamendo.com and http://www.opsound.org/info/license/ and http://dig.ccmixter.org/

Hi, Thank you so much for the help. I got some music from the sites you recommend and used them on a project over the weekend. I delivered slideshow DVD to my client this morning. When my client watched the slideshow, she cried.
