p.1 #1 · A 75-150 Lament

Bit of a revelation after reviewing last night's wedding shots. I've been using a Tokina 50-135 on the D300 for ceremony & candid shots, but it went on the fritz and I didn't have time to make the 2-hour round trip to pick up a rental. I was thinking: "Late afternoon light, lots of windows in the church, why not use the old 75-150?" and so I did.

What a delight! Pics are bright and "snappy" (as good as what I've been getting with the 50-135); didn't miss the 1/2 stop difference. Reception candids were a bit trickier do to MF, but the light weight and small size were nice and it worked great when I turned on the SB800. I'll still use the Tok when it comes back, but the 75-150 has earned my respect and a more prominent place in the bag. If I stay with a DX backup, I might get a Katz Eye screen to improve focus (green dot works but finicky in low light)

My lament? Why, oh why, didn't Nikon ever make this in AF?? I know, very tiny niche in the market, but wouldn't it be fun?!?

You're not the only one.

;-)

I used that lens for many years. I agree that an AF version would be great -- ideal, even.

As a new owner of this lens (now on day 2), I am very happy with it—to the point of putting my 80-200 AF-D up for sale.

I bought this sleeper many years ago for $75. I use it primarily for fully loaded backpack trips, remote field work, etc. It's fast and image quality is good. But how often can you also apply the terms cheap and light to the same lens?

I happen to know there's another FM'er who has a great copy of this lens who's willing to sell it very reasonably: Mike Holloway.

I recently picked up one since I was curious about it, and it is everything they say about it. I think there would actually be demand for an updated AF version, except it may be too costly, given the price point of Nikon's recent releases. It's one thing to get it for some $60 and rave about it, but for $800 it would just sit on the shelf, even with AFS.

I agree, I got mine for around $40 and I love it, but I'm sure AF-S and probably VR would sky rocket the price and seriously increase the size to the point that I'd simply use something else.

Same optics but modern coatings would be nice.
