Kevin, 900mm on DX is 1350mm equivalent. That's a lot of focal length so definitely try mirror lockup. I remember the last time I tried the 500 F4P + TC301 (1000mm) I could see the moon shake non-stop - at least on my tripod setup I have trouble getting to complete stabilization with a heavy lens and long focal length.

Jared, Diallo, welcome!!

Georg, thanks!

Samy

It's a 600mm, so 900 on Dx. Either way, it's hard. My tripod can take the weight, the head is just over its limit. It takes 8 seconds on average for the lens to stabilize. It's a beast of a lens. Even comes with a close up lens diopter so the lens can focus down to about 13 feet. I did a test shot on a radio tower about 3 miles away, heat distortion was heavy...

Some shots from a short walk this evening: I've had some of my favorite MF-Nikkors with me, but shot everything with the PC-E 45/2.8D. I need a cure ;-)

Georg, beautiful demo of how to use the 45 PCE to play with the focal plane!! (I don't want the PCE lenses, I don't want the PCE lenses... )

Kevin, must have been reading upside down, even looked at the photosynthesis page to check its specs and was still reading it upside down on that page 900mm is of course still very long. Was your test shot that was soft that far away, that may be hard to get sharp in the best of circumstances, with all the heat, atmospheric pollution etc. in the way. Maybe try a less challenging shot to verify the lens is good.

I was already curious about the "vintage" look of your color-shots with the 35/1.4. Is this the famous lens with the yellow-ish glass? Anyway, nice work with it, my personal fav from your last sets is "Orpheus".

Thanks Georg, the glass is indeed yellowish and I like the different look until I get tired of looking at yellowing images

Last one for a while before I get accused of monopolizing the thread. This is also with the 35 1.4N, at f/5.6:

Mark, I do have to thank you again for giving me a nice walking tour of the old city of Zürich! We covered a good chunk of the ancient city by my estimate, while managing to stop for a couple of beer (in part to avoid a thunderous and lightning downpour, we'll say!), and taking a couple of photos (perhaps my only regret, I didn't have the camera out more!)

I returned the favour of a photo for the thread, to prove that we met. As you can see, he's a little more clean shaven than his profile picture might suggest at the moment! The 105mm f/1.8 AI-s is sufficiently blurring the background, in this case it is one of the trams outside of the central station.

Thanks again Mark!

Could not get into cabrillo ntnl mnmt. So i had to use one of my few privileges which is access to Navy bases. Now i am in the edge of the water with a beautiful view of SD harbor towards downtown at Naval base Point Loma. Ready to capture the fireworks on the bay barges with the 50-300mm. The bay king lens. Last year a software error made one hour of fireworks go off in 20 seconds. This is the only photo from 2012, all fireworks at once .

Very cool photo of Mark, quite a different persona after getting a haircut Philip and Mark, great to hear of your rendezvous in Zurich.

Scott, thanks! Georg, nice dandelion, very sharp detail within it, the 45 PCE definitely delivers.

Here's trees that looked interesting on the path circumnavigating Fort McHenry, 35 1.4N, f/8:

At 13 miles distance there is a lot that gets in the way. A closer shot would certainly give a more accurate view of the qualities of the lens.

I own a 200-600 f9.5 but don´t use it a lot.
Mirror lock up for apertures under 1/1000th is pretty much the only way to get useful results.

Last full moon I took the lens out, put it on a tripod, used mirror lock up but still didn´t get a single hairsharp picture. I was pretty bummed to say the least. I did get completely sharp shots of a full moon before using this lens so it wasn´t the lens at fault.

This takes my breath away Georg. Fantastic shot. That lens simply won't go away. First Anton, then Chin and now YOU. It makes absolutely NO sense for me to own that lens and with my life in a bit of turmoil at the moment it wouldn't be smart to spend that kind of money... I'm joining Samy and trying to ignore the lens... hopefully it will go away...
