Tony, sorry to hear about the 180AF, hope its just misplaced inside the house. $400 for the 180 AIS is a bit high, I think.

Calling all 180/2.8 shooters, and recent purchasers... I've recently misplaced my 180/2.8 AF (non-D) lens... how I have no earthly idea... really, how do you loose a lens that size?!? I'm careful with my gear in and out of the house so this really bothers me. Could be that it was taken during an outing, I don't have any shots with it in about a month...

But I must move on... and I have to say I've been interested in the AI-S version for a while. I'm already sold on the lens, what it does and all that, my only question is on price range... Tony, I would think $300 is a pretty good price for a 180mmf2.8 ED ais lens if it's optically good and not too shabby. I just got mine a couple of weeks back for just short of $370 but it was very good cosmetically. I was surprised when I opened the box and examined the lens.

It is a bit heavy as someone else has said. I don't seem to be able to hold it still. But nevertheless it is really sharp. Maybe I should have gone for a 200mmf4 ai or ais, which is much lighter and only one stop slower. If you're a big strong guy with big hands then the 180 would be a piece of cake in your hands. Sorry I talk too much; as you have said you're "already sold on the lens."

Thanks Curtis, Philip, Jimmy and Samy for the thoughts/confirmation on the 180/2.8 prices! I've located a couple in the $300 range now, all in that range seem to be optically very clean with some cosmetic issues. That $210 on C-list looks like its pretty good, just needs to be cleaned up a bit... I'm so leary of C-list from my one and only experience buying there (4 years ago).

Anyone have experience with the 'ebay buyer protection', given that this seller has no return policy? Reposting the link Curtis found -

Jimmy - just because I'm 'sold' on the lens doesn't mean I'm not intersted in your thoughts on the lens! I have been considering trying a nice 200/4 copy just to see if that would satisfy me at the focal length for far cheaper and in a smaller package. I also was considering holding off and keeping an eye out for a 200 Micro which I've always been interested in but never wanted to double up on the similar focal length. But right now I'm thinking I'll take a swing at one of the lowish priced 180/2.8's and see how I like it, I know I'll love the optics. Not sure about the handling. It looks 'fatter' than my old 180/2.8 AF, not sure if the weight is up there or not...

A Columbus Day winery trip was called for yesterday and despite some rainy weather my wife and I with a couple friends had a great time as usual. I didn't do a whole lot of shooting given the company but I was really happy with a couple of close up shots using the 55/2.8;

The two b/w conversions are just using the LR4 B/W Preset #3 with a couple tweaks... I always forget those are there but was feeling lazy this morning.

Tony, that copy looks like it is worth bidding on. Typically, ebay/paypal are ok about protecting you if a buyer has been dishonest with the condition. You can always request more photos. The front element can have some wear and dings and it shouldn't effect things too much, if at all. I sold my first copy, a rough looking copy, to Laura and it looked worse than the copy from ebay and it always produced marvelous images.

I payed $380 for my current copy off of ebay.. It was perfect mechanically, optically, and cosmetically though.

I'll second Alan's comment. I've probably bought 30 to 40 lenses on E-Bay without incurring a single problem. Sellers will complain at times because Paypal offers such strong support for buyers who have a problem with what they've purchased. As Alan said, the key issue is not whether you're happy with the purchase but whether the seller has misrepresented it in any way. From the photos and description, I would expect a very serviceable lens that is not in pristine condition... perhaps similar to the first copy of the lens I bought, also for $300. If I were in your position I'd grab it. This seller has no idea the value of this lens. That price is really good. You'd doubtless get your money back with no problem were you to sell it. You may eventually find, as I did, that it is such a keeper that you might want to upgrade to a cleaner copy at some future date.

With regard to the 200 f/4 AI or AI-s, it is a lovely lens but it does not have the chops of the 180 which is a desert island lens for sure. It is sharp wide open with luscious bokeh, which means wonderful isolation of your subject. Happy shopping Tony!

Here are two close-ups I took today in the garden:

old apple tree - 28/2 Ai wide-open, no cropping, processed straight without adding "structures" or "clarity"

While showing less drama than the 35/1.4 (or the 24/2) the 28/2's bokeh isn't completely creamy.
A busy background with many small highlights will provoke the kind of bokeh shown above.
I love my 28/2's

Speed kills Ray...

It eventually happens that folks shooting with MF lenses will want faster versions. That is especially true for those of us who enjoy bokeh play, as I know you do. You are such an accomplished shopper I expect you'll find a copy of this lens. Since the optical design was unchanged you can go all the way back to the C version, N copy. All you need to do is find one that has been converted. It takes the AI kit number 26 which does not appear to be available. But where there is a will, there is a way...
