I bought it. Now I need a bigger camera bag. (Just kidding! The price was $120K!)
The "item demo" button used to bring up a video of two guys testing it out and samples of the images you could get with it. They also explained how it was a custom build for some news agency for the Beijing Olympics.
I see the "lease" button brings up info, so maybe it is being leased out (at $4,068 per month, two year min).

Wasn't it axed for the same reason as the old 200/1.8? To be replaced by a lens with not so stunning FL/aperture combo (in this case, the 800/5.6 IS)
It took almost 8 years to get the 200mm 1.8 replacement. Canon had no immediate plans to replace it whent they discontinued it. Same with the 50mm 1.0 which wasn't replaced until 8 years later.
Canon probably discontined the 1200mm 5.6 because it sold so few units. Maybe Canon will replace it with a 1200mm 5.6 IS in 2013. (Quick someone email the CR guy this).

Maybe there was too much lead or other toxic material involved.

^I heard the what EBH mentioned.
They had lead in some of the design of the lens and by law were forced to retire the design. I imagine it's quite a bit of R&D to redesign the thing and re-release, for an item whereby probably less than 20 have ever been produced.

It makes sense, that could be a cause, but how long was the 200 1.8 on the market before they redid it? Something like 10 years? I think if lead was a problem it would have been shut down long ago.
If anything it is just lack of sells. I for one know I would never buy a lens like that even if I had the money, there are just not enough uses for me. I'm not a pedo.
