Have you tried the Vivitar 2X Macro TC? It is a 2X TC that has a built on adjustable extension tube. I don’t know if it would make a difference in what you are doing but it may be fun to play with and they are around $30 used. The come in several different mounts. Tom, if you want to borrow mine PM me your address and I’ll send it to you. I don’t use it much. It is the Nikon mount version.

Thanks for the offer Heavy, but you reminded me I have one of these in Canon FD mount . I just did a quick fit and when the sun comes up I'll know a little better, but I think I'm going to be busy this weekend taking pic swith it . I'll see what I can come up with.

Great info, here!

One question: using the Telemore TC for infinity or near-infinity shots, the MP-E acts as a 65mm lens? And what's the *real* aperture at that settings?

I know these can be hard to answer questions, but any approximate values (done by comparision with other lenses) are very welcome.

TIA.

Really don't know the answers to either question but would guess the effective aperture is the same as if the TC was not there ie it's as indicated by the magnification on the barrel (M+1) * Set aperture. You seem to need very open set apertures (around F2.8- F5.6).
I asked a lens expert on another forum about this and he said he didn't think the TC would affect the aperture. I didn't understand this at first as there is obviously something funny about the DOF but think he meant that it would not change the apparent aperture from the MPE-65 by itself.

Hi everyone! This is my first post in this forum. I'm Spanish, so I apologize for my bad English. I've tried the MP-E with the Vivitar MFTC (FD mount) and works perfectly, also I think this has better quality than the Komura. I found out last summer, the truth is I was seeking just the opposite, a greater increase, but I was surprised when I saw my MP-E focused at infinity . Tomorrow I will do some photos and I'm going to show my setup Regards !

Hi Macrero and welcome to the forum! That vivitar sounds very interesting... would love to see the setup and some results from it if you get a chance!

I'm new this forum and just getting started in macro work. I've read this and the associated threads with interest, but have a question about set up. I use a Nikon D80 with a Nikkor 200mm micro lens. I have had good success with mounting 1.4x extender in normal position behind the lens and also by adding a 36mm extension tube.

I have tried, as discussed in this thread, to put the 1.4x extender in front of the lens, but am unable to find any point that is in focus with any focus setting on the lens. I've tried both normal and reverse positions with the 1.4x and also tried similar setup with 2 other lens, but again, am unable to achieve any point that is in focus. This is true with any focus setting on the lens from infinity to micro.

Is there something that I am missing here, what does it take to achieve a focus point?

Thanks

jim

Hey Jim,

welcome !

I don't think you can do it with any tc, the telemore is one of the ones that can be used with the mpe to give LESS magnification, useful as the mpe only goes down to 1:1 so anything big won't fit in the frame !

Went to Zilker Botanical Gardens over lunch here in Austin, TX yesterday. Once there I put the MT-24EX on my 40D/MP-E rig and decided to throw the Telemore-95 II in my pocket just in case. Well I guess because of the wind, dressed in business attire (hard to shoot with the MP-E w/o getting on the ground), and limited time I only came across two photographic opportunities which were not macro. I simply took off the MT-24EX flash-head ring from the end of the MP-E and screwed in the Telemore and came up with these two shots:

Lens at ~ 2X Mag, ISO 200, 1/400th, f/2.8
