I was in the garden with my MPE-65 rig when this Hawker came in and landed on one of my darter dragonfly perches. So I slapped on the telemore TC on the front and took a short series of shots- taken in fairly strong natural light.

Nice series of the Hawker, you handled the light well. What is the working distance with this set up ?

Guessing I was shooting from around 12" down to 6" in front of the lens.

Thanks for the comments all

Tom not really got used to this combo yet- these are actually F2.8/F3.2 but I normally shoot natural light in TV mode - might have to go to Av mode when using the TC.

For a moment there, Brian, I thought you were saying you had slapped a parking ticket on it!

Nice series.

Might be an idea if it encourages them to hang up in better places for photography

You are shooting at f 2.8 , f 3.2 ? I can't get that DOF at f 32
Coarse I am using different lenses - nice shots .

I have a nice yard / garden - what do you do to attract them . They come around , but seldom stop at any plant

Thanks Remy and Roy for the comments

Roy- the MPE-65/2X TC combo seems to give very high apparent apertures compared to the set aperture on the lens.

Re attracting the dragonflies - you just need some bugs for them to feed on (a pond helps here with lots of midges) and some canes put in clear spaces in the sun. The darter dragonflies will then use the canes as perches.

If the canes have cross-piece on top, forming a "T", and you place them further out in the water, any resident kingfishers will quite readily perch on them to spot fish swimming below.

By the way, I note a bug in the reply posting software this past day or two: If you reply using the "Quote" button, the text all gets posted in the same colour, not with the new material in white. This is because the [ /quote] (extra space inserted to make it show) has a leading { instead of a [. Editing by replacing the inappropriate bracket with the correct one sorts it out.

Thanks , I have a creek / drainage ditch / canal behind my house . Herons and cranes . But , only 1/6 of an acre / maybe 1/4 hectare front and back , big for here - probably small where you are .
When I bought the place , I came in 1 meter from property line and put in side walks . I put in over 100 roses in front yard [ down to maybe 50 now [ 25 +years . ] 21 fruit trees in back . I have probably 35 brugmansia , the rest of yards is various Dahlias , irises , herb and unusual plants . The only canes I have are raspberries under a big fig tree .
bug wise , buttery flies , gnats , aphids , lady bugs , spiders , beetles and ants . I got rid of most of snails .
The only dragon flies are passing thru . My grass in front is about 25X35 feet - back is about 60X40 feet .
Something has to die or I have to dig up to add a plant .
Oh I am retired - fixed income - but too many relatives hurting for money . I will probably get at least one of the 2X converter off ebay . [ bid on 3 . ]
No mp-e yet but give me 4 months - I tool 2 camera stores I would pay 500 for an ugly one that works good .

That 'fixed income' idea is much beloved of our politicians. Having been an employee for all of my working life, I was unaware of my income ever being other that fixed, in that increments were mostly related to inflation, as is the case now that I have pension income. Or am I missing something?

As for plot size, this is one of the largest of the remaining large suburban gardens in town, thanks to others having been built on in recent years. It is 40 feet wide and over 480 feet long (just over 0.4 acre), with a small brook just beyond our back fence and farmland on the river floodplain beyond, and farmland also only separated from us by two similar gardens along one long side.

We get plenty of dragonflies and damselflies, as well as various hoverflies and butterflies. Herons fly over each day.
