67-86 ring & #5 hood - k-89 hood cap

I've been accumulating a few of the Contax rings / hoods / caps as I can find them on the cheap - decent system. This PeeblePlace Contax db has most of the Contax associated information and some great reviews on some of the Contax and other lenses.

Thanks very much for the information, mMontag - will keep my eyes open for these parts but will also try the rubber hood if I can find one in the meantime:

Soft Lens Shade 67mm G-13(Screw-in type)
Usable lenses <Direct attachment>: P85mm f/1.4, P100mm f/2, MP60mm f/2.8, MP100mm f/2.8, VS100-300mm f/4.5-5.6

sooo ewadler,

Is that lens still available and did you take any shots? - the images may be fine. As much as I enjoy excellent/mint condition lenses for that price and how much I would (or not) use that lens - sounds like a steal.

I did not take any pictures. I brought my camera and realized I had forgotten an adapter.

I am not sure how it would perform, but it was a pretty sizeable spot of fungus. I can't imagine it wouldn't affect the pictures, but I could be wrong. A possibility is that the fungus isn't dead, either.
For the price, it may be a good deal in its current state, I was afraid of getting a $600 lens for $500 and then the fungus gets worse, and in a few months I have a $200 lens (picture quality-wise).
But, they have a 14-day no questions asked return policy. Watch for it to pop up again (the guy said it would take few days to process the return), and give it a try, and return it if you think it is affecting the picture quality.

ewadler,

Thanks - I called them on an UG for $299 and the person mentioned that their UG's should be considered for "parts only" and that image quality would be impaired. The BGN should not impair image.

I have an old 75/1.5 Biogon that was very economical and had several fungus spot - I opened it and cleaned it up - it's not perfect but you can't see any image degradation due to the fungus. No need to inventory primo expensive lenses if they're only going to be on the camera a few times a month or year.

Before I pull the trigger on VS 100-300mm, I saw old thread here http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/508562 . Is it true that Canon 100-300mm f5.6L is sharper than VS 100-300mm?

Maybe. But where is the 3D?

wilco23, the Canons may be 'sharper' however one defines it (and I really dislike single indicator measures, being a statistician) but I for one would require much more than a 'film' test that was unspecified and presented no evidence whatsoever, other than hearsay!

The MTF chart for the 100-300 Vario-Sonnar at 100mm is about as good as that of any modern short tele lens Zeiss ZE/ZF made, and it is much stronger than the 80-200/4. It's instructive, for example, to compare the modern MP100/2 at f4 and infinity with the 100-300VS at f8...or the 85/1.4 at f5.6. MTF is not everything of course, but...it sure demonstrates the lens does not lack for 'sharpness'.

That thread you quote was notable for the incredible level of help offered by Son, who incidentally really knows his stuff.

Thanks phillip for the pointer. I am on the fence to get the lens or not. My requirement is edge to edge sharpness @ f8 and f11

If you dont mind great EtoE sharpness right from wide open, the VS is both sharp and has near APO correction. The latter which I doubt that the Canon 100-300L would have. This based on the superior CA correction of the VS compaired to the Canon 300L4IS and 400L5.6.

Just got the tripod mount of ebay. It is fairly well made and allows shooting from around 115 mm to 300 mm.
Should be good to have.

In seeing what I can from Ebay photos of the lens and the aftermarket collars - I was assuming that it would not allow 100mm - too bad - but 115mm is still pretty good. Thanks for that information.

I looked at some of the RRS collars - nicely expensive and very well made - I would need to get a lens in my hands to completely understand the mechanics but I am envisioning a retro-fit foot mount that would fasten to the lens barrel (machine screws) and be relieved to allow the sliding barrel to retract to full position. I don't know if it's possible - it's a lot of custom work (of which I'm tooled to do) - sounds like a winter project - still need to find a lens.

The distance between the focusing ring and the aperture ring is 7.4mm. There is a shallow recess about 1.5mm wide in front of the aperture ring. So there is at the most 6mm of barrel to grip the lens at 100mm focal length. With proper design of the collar, this should be plenty. Anyone wanting Imperial inches may divide the mm with 25.4.

FWIW I have had no problem with the lens on 7D or 5D2 with the tripod attached to the body. Maybe its because Im mostly a freehand shooter because I find tripods in general to be a pain. A frontheavy camera wont add much to the agony I suppose.

I just had a look on ebay today and only found one, being shipped to US only. Certainly not a commonly available lens...

Z250SA - thanks for the dims - mm is fine - I do a lot of product design and had approximated similar dims from the scale of the photos. I'm thinking of a half round attached to the lens body and to an RRS (Arca) tripod foot - it would allow for three points of connection on the lens tube.

It is pretty light weight - semi-hand holding and camera on a tripod will work pretty well - I did the same with a Canon 70-200/4 of which I sometimes used a collar. I find myself in some pretty hellacious weather and wind at times - dark / longer exposures - I use a very lightweight tripod & ballhead.

AhamB - as I mentioned earlier in this thread - I watched an Ebay - mint, original owner - sell for $645 usd - right after being introduced to this lens. If I had only known they where that scarce.

These are straight from DPP without any improvements except a few clicks of brightness adjustment if needed. Downres to 1200x800 jpg-quality at 7. No cropping. 100-300 Vario-Sonnar on 5D2, wide open or f/5.6. Enjoy?

Yes, the 100-300 can do BIF on a 5D2. Got a string of 10 images, all sharp, wide open at 300mm, ISO 3200 (got to love the high ISO capability!), no added NR.

Nice! & a very nice series - the BIF's turned out well - the high ISO gives that lens a new life - good overall color considering the gray light - gray light is such an equalizer. Thanks!
