today i took a snapshot while the 580 was mounted atop the 5dizzle. the flash fired but when it did, there was a loud pop that scared the $h*t outta me and my wife in the room. the flash now doesn't fire and the lcd doesn't work. any idea what happened? is the 580 toast?
If it was a capacitor that popped, that probably means a soldering job to repair. My SWAG is that you'll be buying a new one, unless it is under warranty. Good luck.
Were you doing a lot of firing? There is a limit to how many high power flashes do can do safely. I think it is in the manual. You are especially likely to have a problem with high power Li batteries, since they don't go dead as fast.

nope, i just picked up the camera and fired one shot and it went boom. flash is not under warranty as i bought it used. i really don't feel like dishing out for another 580 geez. hopefully they can repair it.
1/2 the cost of a new one is my guess. I have sent two lenses and 1 camera in for repair and find that to be about the average. It has always been a borderline question as to repair or replace for me. Let us know what you find out.
Happened to me. Cost or repair was slightly less than a new one. I'm sure they've never actually repaired one that wasn't under warranty. I ended up buying a new one and complained about it for a few days.
When my 580exII went to Canon a few months back, it was a little more than $100 to repair it from a non-functioning state. My guess is that yours will cost about the same. I don't have the paperwork in front of me, but it was some kind of flat-rate repair cost that was very reasonable.
AFAIK Canon charges a flat rate for all flash repairs, around the $125 as FSJ_Guy paid.

But you don't need to call, just package very well, and ship to Canon with a letter and your contact info, name, address, phone and e-mail. Canon will contact you via e-mail when they recieve the item.
Capacitor popped, probably because a resistor failed and stressed the capacitor. Likely that Canon replaces the circuit board rather than individual components.
update: canon just called today. they said that the main board and head assembly would need to be replaced. cost: 410,000 korean won. or $350 USD equivalent. so im presented with a couple of options:
1. repair the old 580ex
2. buy a brand new, more expensive 580exii with a 1year warranty.
3. pick up another used 580exi and a 430exi for roughly the price of a new 580 with warranty.
I had this flash for ALMOST a year from the purchase date before it crapped out on me.
i really didn't feel like shelling out for another flash but seeing as i might experience another problem with a used 580 (paying more in the long run), the mkii might offer me more peace of mind because of the one year warranty. budget is a big concern here. what would FM do?
