Thanks Allen!

Can't blame you, this is an awesome combo

I think its because of my poor eyesight that I never enjoyed shooting anything above 50mm on the Leica rangefinders.. until now. I'm sure you'll enjoy using the M240 for your paid work. If you love the shutter sound of the film Ms, the M240 is pretty close, not as quiet but has the same DNA. BTW, send us some pics of your exhibition after it opens?

I really don't like the direction the big two are moving in and my dream would be an M-E with the CMOS. No video, all manual, no frills.

Gary, thanks, next time you're in Hamilton we'll have to head out for a few rounds. I like the second and third. The first one feels a bit unsharp. Is this the non-ASPH?

Sounds great! Yep - the first is quite a bit out of focus but I liked the overall feel nonetheless. This is the pre-asph (e46) which I absolutely love so far.

Joe - really nice pic!

Ron,

I uploaded a few DNG's to Dropbox.. Would like to see what you do.. (I'll take down the files after you've downloaded 'em). Sorry about the poor content, had an hour to play with the new cam.

I'm going to comment on peoples photos and post my own soon, but had to share that my Chrome M should be here in about 2 weeks!

Expect a nice MM vs M240 comparison soon.

It looks like heading that way

Joe, I appreciate your detail/fast feedback about M240. It is really helpful. shutter delay when use EVF could post an issue for me. But improved shutter sounds promising.

And you hit the nail on head about WA and 90AA usage with new Leica.

Thanks Gary and everyone else for the comments and "likes".

Andrew, excellent set! #1 and 8 are my favorites.
Ajay, mine is black too, good choice. Have a safe journey and take some pics!
Ryan, congrats on the chrome M! Looking forward to your test but I think the Mono is still the low light and B&W king of digital Ms for now.

Michael and Edward, come on... join the M revolution what are you both waiting for?

I'm heading out on the road again. Probably my last post for the week. These two samples below were taken with mid day sun, and the M240 handled DR quite nicely, both af f/2 Again LR4 having issues predicting correct exposure. Overall skin tones looks pretty accurate out of camera when exposed correctly, but when pushed in LR4, it turns reddish and pinkish and hard to correct. These warm WB look are exactly the samples that you are seeing on the www everywhere. I'm sure there will be updates and improvement from Leica or Adobe soon. Also the shadow details are not as robust as the M9 and for now it seems that we have to expose accurately and not underexpose. When pushing shadows or exposure past ISO3200, you get flakes, banding and red artifacts all over the place, worse than the M9 at ISO2500. What others said might be true, this is a sensor that may need to be ETTR or for shadows, totally opposite to the M9 and Monochrom

Ajay - thanks for posting those DNG files. I've downloaded them and below are my interpretations.

Andrew - great set. In the words of a friend of Chinese heritage, the skin tones in some of these make the subjects look somewhat 'pumpkin.' Perhaps some selective desaturation?

Joe - looks very nice!

Here's what I've done with Ajay's photos. Nothing fancy and nothing too crazy either. I really was mostly interested in getting my hands on a few files to push excessively, like was done with the preproduction DNGs.

The first image above was a real torture test. Ajay pushed his example three stops. I went all out in LR4.3 (therefore no M240 profile) with five stops and it turned out better than I thought. Here's the original:

Here's a 100% crop:

The first thing I noticed was that the shadow areas had a pretty strong green cast, so I added some magenta via the shadow tint slider under Camera Calibration. At least with LR4.3, each point of additional tint seemed to make a huge adjustment that I wasn't expecting.
As Joe pointed out, when the M files are pushed excessively, you'll see some crosshatch banding and plenty of hot pixels, as can be seen somewhat in the crop above. For this one, I set luminance NR at 50 and chroma NR also at 50, but as you can see, there is still some chroma blotchiness that actually never went away even at 100. The luminance setting was to taste for this file. I could have pushed it even more, though at the cost of some finer details.

Here's a detail of the flower bouquet in the window:

I don't think that's 100%, but it's near there. Looks OK to me.

Here's a 100% crop of a shadow area pushed three stops in LR:

Looks pretty reasonable to me, and this is with zero luminance NR and with the default LR sharpening setting of 25. What I noticed playing with Ajay's DNGs, as well as a few new ones posted in LUF, was that it doesn't really take as much as I was expecting to really open up shadow areas of M files. As you can see above, three stops is really excessive. My guess is 1-2 stops is probably more the norm, and at least with ISO 200 files, it shouldn't be a problem. The question of course is what happens with higher ISO files, say around 800, if pushed 1-2 stops? Perhaps that will still be within reason since it stays at or under an ISO 3200 equivalent.

The five stop push above is essentially the equivalent to ISO 6400. Since we know M files at that ISO are looking to be quite delicate, but ISO 3200 is not bad, then it would seem +4 push from base ISO is probably doable and usable.

If someone would care to shoot & share some ISO 800-3200 ISO DNG files, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Michael, Ron.

Ron, nice pp and good observation, you seem to have done more testing than I have shot the M240, even though you don't have a camera I think I need to play around with the calibration sliders in LR4, something I have not tried. Thanks for the tip!

I certainly plan to get one further down the road, but I am waiting until it is more readily available in stores and all the hype cools down a bit. In Thailand it is crazy expensive right now, and buying online is not an option as I want full local warranty.

Weather here over the Easter weekend was pretty nice. Went for a bit of a drive on Good Friday over to Lake Huron to hit the beaches. Still lots of ice in Grand Bend, but none in Goderich. Should be nice in about three months.

Very nice Bruno & Edward!

Just read about Leica price increases as of May 1, at least in the US. Here's what's of interest to at us:

Leica Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4 ASPH - $7,250 (previously $6,995)
Leica Summilux-M 24mm f/1.4 ASPH - $7,250 (previously $6,995)
Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH - $7,350 (previously $7,195)
Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (with Floating Element) - $5,150 (previously $4,995)
Leica Summarit-M 35mm f/2.5 - $1,950 (previously $1,895)
Leica Summarit-M 50mm f/2.5 - $1,650 (previously $1,495)
Leica Summarit-M 75mm f/2.5 - $1,950 (previously $1,895)
Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 - $1,950 (previously $1,895)
Leica APO-Telyt-M 135mm f/3.4 ASPH - $3,650 (previously $3,495)

I find it peculiar they've targeted the Summarit lenses, where one would think a relatively inexpensive line would act as an attractive entry point into the system...

Anyway, a few more photos...
