First-timer here. First of all, I'd like to say that this thread inspired me on getting this lens plus a D700 even though it's waaay out of my budget. It took me months of saving and I have to sell all my dx gear
I really like the "3D-look" that it produces. It was what that sold me to get this. But my problem is I can't get it consistently or at will.
Any tips on how to make your subjects look like 3D/pop-out? I've tried shooting up/low/subject-level, shooting near the subject with lots of space in the background, shooting on parallel plane with the subject, shooting with a high ISO and faster shutter-speed etc.. but I can't get that 3D look consistently. Can I ask you guys how do you go about it to achieve this? Any techniques? Thanks in advance

I had the same problem (along with focus issues) and sent mine to Nikon. It came back, the focus issues are largely gone and my pictures are waaay more 3D like.

Point is, it may not be you as much as the lens
There are many components that make a image look 3D. Subject, lighting, background, and DOF all play a part. Lighting to me is the most important as the light will make the eyes and brain see a 3d effect.
a little contribution... i had the chance to use this in my travel to bangkok shooting a little bit of everything including a friend's wedding.. here's some wide open shots taken at the street.. all taken with a d7000...
