That's where I downloaded it. Canon site isn't working for me. Downloaded fine, just can't extract.

You don't extract that file, it's already a .fir file for doing the upgrade!

Oops, I get confused on all the different procedures I forget sometimes. Updating now.

Thanks dhphoto. I've always liked your gallery too.

I don't have any proper pictures in my gallery, only samples to go in threads, but thanks

I'd much rather have a firmware update that allows for real auto ISO than enhanced video capability personally.

I agree. Although the IQ from the 5DII is so good at the higher ISO's I don't worry too much about going up there if needed

I updated with no problems. Admittedly I was so exited that I jammed my cf card into my reader and nearly broke it!

I share your excitement, but unfortunately am at work and have to wait until this evening to install it. But the file is on my computer! Wouldn't have even bought this camera had the firmware update not been released.

And other enhancements that the 7D has such as greater latitude for exposure compensation in Av and Tv modes etc. I hope Canon doesn't forgot these are picture taking tools.

Serious question: what do people use more than 3 stops of exposure compensation for?

I've been shooting for over 35 years and I can't come up with any real examples of when that would be needed over, say, slotting into manual mode. Anyone?

Totally bummed about the lack of 60fps.

The file I downloaded from the Canon site is an .exe file and I've attached the error message I get when I try to extract it. I've done a search on the computer and the .fir file is nowhere to be found. Any ideas on how to proceed?

You can download the .fir file, that doesn't need expanding, here:

Thanks, much better. The first time I went to RapidShare all I saw were the prices to join. This time I noticed the countdown to the free download and all is well. I wonder what's wrong with the Canon download?

I'd kill just to do -3 FEC on camera. 5DII only does +/-2 on camera, using an ST-E2, using a 4xxEX flash, or using my Pocketwizard TTL system. It can only do +/-3 FEC with a 5xxEX flash on, which isn't always possible when I'm shooting a wedding with 2 cameras on me, 2 on my assistant, remote flashes set up which need all my 5xxEX flashes. When going for subtle side lighting that doesn't look flashy and matches the ambient, being able to do -3 FEC is critical to me.

Just FYI. Not everyone has this problem. +/-2 EC is fine and I have no need for positive FEC ever. But just make it simple and put +/-3 on everything on the camera. Nikon is now doing +/-4.

The post was, I believe about exposure compensation, as was my reply, not about flash exposure compensation, although I think you'll struggle to see much at more than 3 stops underexposed from any of your flashes.

I'm often at -2 FEC to give a little brightness and a highlight to a portrait, much less than that you'll be hard pressed to see IMHO

I did the update. Now I might be inclined to shoot a movie.

Can someone point to an explanation of the logic behind the different frame rates:

I mean why is NTSC has 30 fps and 24 fps, while PAL is 24 fps and 25 fps?

Thanks for this link! The Canon servers are so busy and slow at this time that I even can't download any of the manuals. Just installed the update and everything works fine so far.

The EC scale on-camera is +/-2. The FEC scale is the same indicator scale, I'm sure you've noticed this in your 25 years. Nevermind, no point trying to argue with someone who wishes to remain unconvinced.

I am going to make a guess that both have 24 fps because both TV broadcast standards would like to shoot film @ 24 fps, but NTSC has a native frame rate of 29.97 fps, whereas PAL has a native frame rate of 25 fps.
