What would a used leica summicron r 180 f2 run used? Ive been wanting one but I dont know how much they run and I dont know where to get one. They always have one or two on ebay but that seems risky.
I think they are going for around $3500. What's the risk with eBay? You are covered under eBay buyer's protection. I think it is more risky for seller than buyer nowadays. The main risk is that there may be something wrong with the lens and it is not described, so ask very detailed questions and make sure seller's responses are kept in your eBay message box as a proof in case if there is a conflict later.
Roughly $3500 give or take. Amazing lens and easy to hand hold despite it's heft given the design of the tripod foot (brilliant).
I'd try this FM, getdpi.com, KEH, or kevincameras.com (a bit premium priced but great to deal with) or other reputable dealers first. I find Ebay prices, especially on used Leica glass, reached silly levels some time ago.
"Up for auction is the last production run of R-glass, as new in box (used) with ROM contacts, Summilux 85 1.4 serial number 38xxxx for a reasonable Buy-It-Now price of $2700, note this lens was over 3K when in production, blah blah blah" Conner999 wrote:

Yeah, I don't have the patience to trawl through Evilbay for reasonably priced Leica or Zeiss. Most of the gear I find there is way over priced. Not to say that you can't find gear at good prices, you certainly can, but I think it takes a combination of determination and a bit of luck.
Hypothetical question: all other bidders fall away, and one competitor is left - if somebody bids 8 straight, until they get "outbid" by your automatic (bid) limit - at, let's say $1.56 more than their 8th bid (not a cheap item, BTW)
15 minutes are left in the auction. They've obviously found your break point because your bid is only a smidge above theirs now, even if e-bay says "bid by XX above?" Instead of whole numbers managed by e-bay, now your bid is something funky, like $451.26
And...they then walk away, when it could have been theirs for another 5 or 20 bucks?
What does that mean? I have my idea(s) but might someone with more experience give insight?

Sounds like shill bidding to me. One of the reasons I tend to snipe.

No offense, but only someone who's never had to file a claim with Ebay or Paypal would write that.
The horror stories to be found online are numerous.
I filed eBay and PayPal complaints. The worst case scenario always was that PayPal offered me to return the item back to the seller and would refund my purchase price (but not the shipping fees). For the most part, however, seller would rather give a partial refund than go through this hassle.
Try returning something to a crooked seller. One who claims it was damaged in shipment, or who uses a false address, or ... You have no idea how many things can hang you up.
Also, in most cases you have to obtain PROOF that the item is not as listed in the auction. That can take serious time & money, as most experts will not want to get involved.

There's a little truth in the feedback system but otherwise don't trust ebay/paypal. Paypal doesn't even use a secure login system. I have disconnected it from my bank after being caught out by a fraudulent payer. Don't rely on ebay/paypal refunds. They are happy to screw anybody.
