p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Post EF300 f/4 IS USM shot please

Hi, I just purchased an EF 300mm f/4 IS USM, I did the micro adjustment to + 12 yesterday because the first pictures came out soft,
here is the test I did this morning with this little friend.
1st a reduced size no sharpening,
2nd a 100% crop
3rd my 7D with the lens

Please post one of your shots with your EF300mm f/4, any camera.

I am exited with mine.

I will appreciate any comments on the purple color that appeared in the eye
And in other high contrast areas, the sun direction wasn’t in my favor.

I went wide open to f/4 because I wanted the back ground blured

Juan

It's a nice lens Juan. I took this one last year with it.

the purple in the eye is perfectly normal for this lens. while it does have high quality ED glass, it will not completely prevent chromatic abberation. for that you need flourite elements which would dramatically raise the price.

i shoot exclusively with the 300 (and 1.4 tc). instead of posting a single shot feel free to look through my gallery.

Here are a couple:

Edit:
Hmmm... I'm going to have to experiment with how I post on ImageEvent; these look soft here...

Juan, your new lens looks plenty sharp. The 7D really test lenses because of its high MP count, but those images look great.

My claim also, 6 years with the 300f4! I've shot for years with the 1.4x on it. Quite a nice set up [although test it at the store to make sure the 7D likes the teleconverter with the 300f4.]

It's a workhorse lens, glad you like it. Congrats.
Heres a link to a zillion albums with my 300f4 being my main lens for wildlife, some macro: [ only the last few months have I shot with the 500f4]. I miss my 300f4! I need to break it out again this weekend. There is alot to be said for a light weight set up! Alot more action shots for sure, and alot easier to carry!

are the Kenko tubes a good option? I don't mean the air inside, is the tube solid and strong to hold the lens and the body of my 7D?

Kenko air is far superior to Canon air any day of the week

I have never had any problems with using Kenko tubes and my 300, for that matter I have used them with my 500 and trust me, that weighs a bit more

if you read my question carefully, I am not asking about the air inside,
I knew that somebody was going to came out with this,
I am asking about the quality of the tube it's self to hold the camera and the lens together
tight and not loose to the body like a sigma lens that I already got rid of it

I think that kenko lens don’t support EF-S lenses, right?

When I first got mine, all I had was this tired, old 6.3mp 10D:

http://deanwcains.smugmug.com/photos/135258651_RGqCV-L.jpg

Both hand-held at f/4.

And a few with the 1.4x TC (effectively f/5.6):

I'm sorry if my humor was not obvious enough. If you read my answer beyond that you would see that I did indeed answer your question.

You will never have any trouble with the Kenco tubes as its just like adding a TE but no glass in it. It will hold my 400 2.8 with no trouble. Tim has very pure air where he lives

I would recheck your MA. In the shot of the squirrel the plane of focus appears to be the front face of the cinder block. I would expect that you tried to focus on the eye. On the condors, the focus appears to be on the branch well forward of the birds. IMO your are front focusing. Otherwise, the lens looks great.

A kind thank you! Don't feel bad as I am without the lens now and these shots remind me to get another one as soon as I can
