My reaction enjoy yourselves and if your prediction is right you'll be able to pick up a 28 cheap. Then again the same thing was said about the Canon 200 F1.8 when the 200 F2.0 was released. The price didn't drop that much. For me doesn't matter I have no plans on selling the 28 I'm happy with it and I don't have to shell out any money for a wide angle low light 24. But the 24 PCE is very tempting.

Just curious, how does your 24L II compare to ur Nikon 28/1.4?
The Canon 24L II has better contrast, flare control and is sharper, the Nikon has warmer colors, works better with infrared, and seems to AF faster on the D700 then the 24 on a 5D MKII.
the 28 is as good as the price suggests. incredible colors, bokeh, sharpness- nice size, fast af.
It is the really expensive lens out there that i actually have to keep myself from buying. I simply don't want to pay $3k for any single lens.
Nikon effectively cut the value of the 28mm 1.4 in half, but people are still wanting over $3000 for a 10 year old lens. Good luck with that. I would put $1500 in one, but not more than the state of the art new lens.
Bert, did you expect the market value to drop overnight? If so, you must be smoking crack.
Nobody even knows for sure yet what the REAL price of the new lens will be, or how it will perform in real world conditions. I think the 28's price might go down some, but probably not to 1500. I am not sure i would even pay 1500 for one, although it would be worth it for sure.

Well if I was "smoking crack" then it wouldn't make any difference as I would not have the money to buy anything. REAL price is going to be max $2200 per NIKON. Has Nikon put out a PRO grade lens that didn't perform? I think the whole "I will wait on test images" is pretty much pointless. The 24mm will be stellar, I do think Nikon has a few cameras to test the thing with.

I suspect a lot of the people paying $3K for a 28mm f/1.4 are using them on motion picture cameras where manual focus and direct aperture control are pluses. Same with the very venerable 300mm f/2 ED-IF Nikkor.
From my recent watch on 28mm F1.4 on fleebay, right after the 24mm F1.4 announcement, there are a lot of copies popping up for cheaper price. It seems to have come down to around 2.5k area where it used to be 3k+.

Running a rental house, I can definitely confirm the demand from movie people keeps the older non-G lenses in high demand. Almost all the 28 f1.4 rentals we do are to movie makers, just the occasional photographer wants it. The movie folks won't be very interested in the new 24, but they will remain interested in 28s. They want manual aperture control.
Given that there is a steady demand, the aging of the remaining copies (I think there were only 7,500 made or something like that) will keep the price up. If I can find some panic selling on eBay, I'll be buying at least one more tonight
