Wes, these Canon macro lenses are not very fast either, however, the key is to prefocus to the anticipated distance of first contact. Then the lens response is practically instantaneous. After that, what's important is to keep that center AF point on the bird's head. Once AF is lost, it's gone.....the recovery is practically impossible.
