Hello,
How do you shoot snow with a digital camera? When I shot snow with my EOS3 I knew that the film would underexpose it about 1-1.5 stops so I bumped the exposure compensation to offset this. However, with digital I am not sure how to expose for snow and would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi,

You'd be about right with the same approach. I'd tend to take a reading from the snow, dial in +1 2/3 stops, then check the histogram, aiming to adjust from this starting point to as bright an image as possible before blowing the highlights (the histogram graph will almost touch the right side of the graph).

Sometimes you may want the snow not quite white, if for example you want to portray a dark-cold-evening.

It also highly vary on the amount of other objects in the frame besides snow, such as trees, water, and blue sky.

I agree with James, work with your histogram. but depending on the mood you want to convey and how overcast the sky is, there can be quite a range of F stops. It can vary anywhere from 0 EV to +2 EV.

The advantage you have with digital over film is that you can review your shot immediately and compensate....

Thank you everyone. I tried it out my window and saw how the histogram should look with a snow shot. It is just a matter of practice with my digital camera, I guess. The 1Ds mkII is my first digital camera and I am coming along pretty good in understanding how it works. Thank you again.

That's a fine camera for your first, it should serve you well.

Happy shooting.
