Oh men... again a fake war: primes versus zooms! IMHO is not this situation.
Roger and Steve... the situation seems to be like you try to convince us not because zooms are better... No way! That's only a circumstantial situation because Nikon did not invested any cent in R&D to produce pro primes in digital era. Looking in mirror Nikon did huge investments towards zooms. That's good for you and for them! This can change radically if Mr.Nikon will change a little bit his mind, producing some good AF-S primes.
For you the versatility of a focal range is important... for others the versatility of aperture is most prefered. Each position has good points but none is really dominating the other. ...Show more →
If primes become better than zooms down the road, I'll have a bag full of 'em. Based on what's in the lineup now, zooms (again, in my opinion) are the better bet - at least for what I shoot. As I said, there are times (DOF / low light) where I think primes shine. But really, at F8 is a prime really better at any level optically?
That said, I still say you'll see a 24 1.4 this week (probably tomorrow).
Each lens has its own use. I like primes for most of stuff but for certain things, zooms are key to good pictures. I also feel zooms make people lazy too. Primes challenge me and give me more edge while I am shooting. I get more light but I have to move around for the light. Primes make me move around and interact with my subject. I like that.
24 and 35 f/1.4. I need you. If they both came out tonight, I would most likely get the 35 f/1.4.
In light of it all though, a 24-70 or a 35 f/1.4 as my next lens. I might go for the 24-70. Just because it is something I need for my work.
Of course, there's no guarantee that an updated 85 1.4 would be as optically magical as the current 85 f/1.4d. It could look better on a spec sheet or dxo charts, but just not have that certain something the current version has.
Its a catch 22. If new better faster equipment is announced, we then have to figure out what we unload to purchase the new better faster equipment. If nothing is announced we breath a sigh of relief that we dont have to find a way to pay for the new better faster equipment. We then begin to speculate why it was not released. A day or two goes by we all start to think about how our current gear is perfect. Two or three more days go by a new thread starts with rummors about a new, better, faster peice of equipment. And so on and so on!!!
I don't need an announcement at PMA to decide on which direction to go. I am looking either for a D700-like camera from Canon or mid-level lenses (AF-S f/4 zooms, AF-S f/2 primes) from Nikon.
My hunch is that Canon will get there first, and quite likely Nikon never gets there at all.

there is no prime in its range that can beat the 14-24.
That's funny. There are a few alternative primes which equal or better the beloved, holy grail 14-24mm. You just need to open up your eyes to using a prime.... As I mentioned though, primes may not be the right choice for you - it all depends on your personal needs. Some people feel very limited using a prime and others (like me) feel it actually allows one to be more creative. I have tried the 14-24mm and it is no doubt an incredible lens but it didn't outperform some of the alternative primes available in it's range. To each their own but this was my personal choice....
