p.1 #1 · iMac 27" Defects

I'm in the process of looking to purchasing a new computer to replace my old PC. I've decided I want the new iMac i7 27...... However I'm very aware the there have been numerous issues with the monitors on these computers (flickering, dead pixels, and yellow tinting in bottom third of monitor). Check this link for more info, seems wide spread. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=824940
http://imac.squeaked.com/results.php
With this poll I'd like to gauge what percentage of member have had issues with their iMacs and how/if they were able to resolve them.
Thank you all in advance
Nick

Also interested in the poll as I'm looking to replace my 5 year old 20" iMac with a new 27.

I was in the same boat recently. I watched for a while and saw no sign of a definitive fix. So I bought a refurb 24" 3.06ghz iMac (1tb hd and 512mb graphics card) for about 1/2 the price of the i7. Very happy with it. I would have loved the i7, but all the problems turned me off.

I am typing this on my 3 month old 27" iMac and I am delighted with it.......particularly the screen. I do model portfolios / shoots and they cannot believe how good they look.....(Well...PS helped as well!!).

Not a single glitch so far!

I'll be honest, I was expecting a lot more people to be having issues with their new iMacs. Based on all the forums I've been reading (see links from original post), it seems that almost every iMac that roles of the assembly line seems to have defects of one sort or another.
So now I'm more confused, based on this pole just one member is having problems while the rest are working perfectly.........do I chance it or wait?
From the research I've done, the flickering, yellow tinting is a hardware rather than software. There is also some talk that the ATI graphics card that replaced the nVidia may also be at fault.
Got some pondering to do.........

The only problem I had with mine is that it 'lost' Bluetooth. Fixed that by shutting down, pulling out the power lead for two minutes and starting up again.

Lightroom runs really well with the i7. Exporting web galleries used to be a chore, but is now a breeze.

From today on AppleInsider ...

"According to one of our sources, the company completely stopped the iMac 27" assembling lines," Hardmac wrote, "the production will not resume before Apple has finally found a reliable and definitive fix for the remaining past (flickering and flashing display) and new issues (yellowish panel and flickering display) affecting those models."

I probably messed around with 6 - 7 display models in various shops before deciding to buy......each one looked good to me.

I also bought a smaller HP monitor to use as a second screen with the iMac. It just looked sad by comparison...so much so that I have moved it to another computer that I mainly use for letters etc.

This is good news, IF it's true, which I hope it is. Shows that
Apple is serious about getting to the bottom of these problems and
that it stands behind their products.....
I went into one of their retail outlets today and asked one of the
associates if he had heard about these problems. His responce was
that he really hadn't, which I really didn't believe, and that they are
completely out of stock. This may indicate that either the iMacs
are selling like crazy or perhaps they stopped sales until the defects are
resolved. I kinda believe the first one is true though....
I'm thinking that I'll just wait and see what happens in the next
little while..

My retail store in White Plains NY says they don't sell i7's!

They have to be ordered on line.. weird..

I think I'm gonna get one in the upcoming months, but I will keep an eye on this thread meanwhile.

Thanks for all the info ..

Actually that's true, I was told the same up here
in Toronto. After asking around, the i7's are only
available online, you can only get the 27" i5's at the store
level....

From what I've been reading, the longer wait times is directly a
result of Apple trying to resolve all these issues, so their pushing
back all orders in order to give them some breathing room to trouble shoot.

That's OK with me - I'll wait. As long as they figure it out and solve the issue. My 20" pizza-box iMac will be 5 years old this summer. It works, but it's outdated, and it's not able to run Aperture. And it doesn't have that 27" screen And I really can't go for the Mac Pro

Just received a 21.5 inch imac this past week. Was excited as I ma changing over from PC. The display was terrible. They determined that I got a bad one and I had to ship back today. They said will be a week or so before the replacement arrives

Some potentially interesting news.
I was going through one of a multiple forums on the iMacs problems and came across
a vary interesting post which I thought I should share.
Remember this is copy of a post so take it with a grain of salt, but it looks promising

Hi again!
I have even more exciting news for you guys to analyse! Just called the Mac guys back asking them about this inconsistency with the things they have been telling me so they sent me a copy of the info they got about the yellowing of the screens from Apple. I saw this document which is strictly confidential but the guy saw how angry i was. The document says that Apple have been working on this fix since Christmas and that this update (coming around the 10th of Feb) is not a firmware update, it is much much more. The update will go deeper into the iMac way of functioning and the display of color. Basically the update (not a firmware update!) will change the way the 27" displays color. It is, as it says on the document, a MACHINE CODE UPDATE (in big black capital letters) So happy to be able to report this to you guys Before you ask me to send you the document, the guy at the store asked me to keep this to myself Hope this helps

Lets see......
