Boris - it depends on which country you're in. I've never tried to go into a mosque in Dubai but there is one (Jumeirah Mosque) on the tourist trail which allows organised tours and walk ins as far as I know.
This mosque that I've photographed is probably the biggest tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi. Free entry but you'll have to wear a white dishdash if you're make and wearing shorts, or an abaya and head scarf if you're a woman

Rodluvan,
Although Aya Sophia was once a Mosque it was originally a Church and currently a museum. I believe your detailed photos show the upper portions of the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) in Istanbul.
Sandy.
Yes, those were two different mosques. I actually didn't know it was a museum now (I knew about it having been a basilica). Nothing about it said "Museum", but then again, my turkish isn't what it should be.

I have visited mosques in Egypt, no problem. I think different countries are different.
I think it's very very unusual to not being allowed inside a mosque. I have been visiting 30-40 mosques in about ten different countries and never been stopped

Ulff - Beautiful set. I really like the way how you make the set strongly cohesive with the specific sizing. In this set, majority of shots has point of interest on the center - right side, and ended with the strong diagonal with the bee on the left. Very nice surprise.
Lieutenant - Beautiful capture and use of water drip frozen in the mid air with the pedestrian caught in the 'arch'. Loving your 'seeing through' theme here.
Gregg - Interesting how leaves have white border around. Nice texture
Martynas - Gorgeous capture of "the fortress of solitude". Did you put light source inside for the soft warm glow ? Whatever it is, the lighting is just magical. Beautiful 'triptych'. Color temp / PP is right on the money in conveying the mood.
Jim - Beautiful B/W feather shot. Love this shot.
Liquidpics - Nice 'urbex'. Hope you will get a hold of these fine lenses again.

Wikipedia: "Under most interpretations of sharia, non-Muslims may be allowed into mosques, as long as they do not sleep or eat there. A dissenting opinion is presented by followers of the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence, who argue that non-Muslims may not be allowed into mosques under any circumstances. [...] However, the Umayyad caliph Umar II later forbade non-Muslims from entering mosques, and his ruling remains in practice in present day Saudi Arabia Today, the decision on whether non-Muslims should be allowed to enter mosques varies. With few exceptions, mosques in the Arabian Peninsula as well as Morocco do not allow entry to non-Muslims. [...] However, there are also many other places in the west as well as the Islamic world where non-Muslims are welcome to enter mosques. [...] In modern-day Saudi Arabia, the Grand Mosque and all of Mecca are open only to Muslims."
