p.1 #1 · Which one of the lens align kits are the best deal?

Just wondering which one of these you would grab? Just looking for the best bang for the buck. Will be using it with a possible purchase of a 7d in the future. Thanks!

Get the full package of the Lens Align Pro, with the long ruler if you use long teles. Set it up on a spare tripod and you can achieve perfect alignment in less than a minute. I love it despite the rather high cost.

I have found that most lenses are focusing just fine and don't need adjustment, but a few are off by up to 3 clicks. If they are off by more than that you might want to have the lens checked. If all lenses are off in one direction it may be the body.

I bought the LITE version for my 24-105, 50, 85, 70-200 and it works great. I would think you would need the PRO if you have over a 300mm lens, as my guess. I had hoped to share with friends, but most have older bodies that don't have the adjustment. My lenses were +5 or less for adjustments.

The longest lens I have is a 70-200mm, thinking I could get the cheaper kit? What is the benefit of the pro kit?

Well judging from the guy who replied second it looks like you could get along with the lite version with that lens. Lucky sob! $249 for me = ouchy!

I would try to MA the lenses just using a alignment target that you can get free off the internet. Ensure your camera is totally parallel to the target and shoot away. The $249 for the lens align kit is one ripoff.

The advantage to the Pro version is the ability to confirm the sensor is parallel to the target, it works well. I used the Pro version with the standard rule with my 400 with no problem.

The pro one works best and is easiest. You don't really need the long ruler kit unless you are doing 300+. If you go to the support part of his webisite there is a calculator that will show you when the long ruler is needed.

Expensive? yes
Works easy and reliable? Absolutely
Would I buy again? Absolutely

I am the "guy" you mentioned?
The Pro version is the one to get. The long ruler is only beeded with the long tele lenses which are usualy tested at greater distances. It is possible to use the standard ruler if the focus error is not too great.

I agree with EBH
I started out with the Lite and went to Pro W/O the long ruler, MUCH easier to setup and use. Also has a distance and Adj setting scale built onto it so reviewing shots is also easier.

Personally, I think the Lens Align stuff is a rip off - way, way overpriced. $180 for a plastic ruler and focus target? I still have a hard time believing that one.

A guy on POTN did a paper laminated version that works just fine - $15. I have one and it works great. One could also do the same with a focus target and a yard or meter stick. It is not a difficult concept.

its not something that is a one shot piece of tooling. lenses can move back out of limits with use. there are new lenses too. so its a keeper. its a tool of tolerance, precision and repeatability. it is a "standard" to work with.

Makes sense. I have a cordless hammer drill by Hilti that can go through travertine like butter, running it all day if need be. Costs way, way more than the regular Joe kind from Sears. Though ask me how often I drill through travertine.

thats right when you put things together correctly, with style and make it easy to use it becomes a tool too. the ability to think, design make it work a certain way so its easy to use is a little harder the looking looking back with 20/20 sight and saying look now that someone else did it first i can do it easier and cheaper.
