Used 5D body is around $1100 - $1200, 1Ds II $1900 - $2000

I was thinking the 5D would be a clear winner since I don't see a major advantage to the 1Ds II and if I were to pay $2000 for it, I might as well save up some more and get a 5D II which would be somewhere around $2200 - $2300.

Is this logical? What would you buy if you could afford both but are deciding based on value instead of price?

1Ds II advantages over 5D - weather sealed, built like a tank, 45 point 'pro' AF, 4 extra MP. 4FPS vs 3FPS.
5D advantages over 1Ds II - 2.5" screen vs 2", cheaper.

What you value is the value

5D and 1sII are two different cameras in a different league. I guess the 5D is the right one for you, since if you knew why, you would know why you would need the 1DsmkII.

The 1DsII is a professional, heavy built machine with fast AF and a few features above the 5D. A few more megapixels cropping headroom as well. The 5D OTOH is a compact semipro model with great image quality in compact filesize at a great price and almost every feature most amateurs and (non-journalist) professionals need. The 5DmkII is a the latest generation semi pro model with video and oversized files with max cropping headroom, and some great extra features over the classic 5D. I would buy the 1DsmkII, but that's me. There is no EOSfun like 1D series EOSfun. If you once used them you'll know why (or hate them for the weight). There is no way back.

Lots of threads about this recently. Short answer: Both. Then you can use the 1Ds2 "for real" and the 5D as a lightweight walkabout. If you must have only one, well, to me the 5D's only real advantage is its size and weight. It might make better JPEGs straight out of the camera, but most of us wouldn't know.

i won't give up my 1ds2 even 5d3 is available. Yes, that's good - just follow Stanj & EOSfun & Greg & most FM seniors here you can't go wrong

As Greg said, "5D as a lightweight walkabout" is also the most critical selection point. Make sure it fits your need. Best of luck

I always think that weight of cameras is overstated, I remember when I had a 350D and 18-55 kit lens and my uncle let me have a play with his 5D, grip and 70-200 2.8 IS, after 20 seconds I felt like my arms were going to drop off, however over the last five years I've moved upwards and now use a 1Ds with 24-70 attached 90% of the time for 12+ hours at a time during weddings, the weight of which is roughly the same weight as the aformentioned combo and I don't find it heavy at all, I think you get used to weight very quickly if you just get on with it.

That said I did have tendon 'twinges' in my right arm (presumably a weak form of RSI?) for my first year doing weddings. Oh and I'm left handed before anyone lowers the tone

i've had 3 5D's. great all-around camera, really. if you don't need the better AF, the sealing and build, and the extra mpx of the 1Ds II, buy the 5D as you say, for its value.

that said, it's the 1-series bodies that i prefer and rely on for all the reasons mentioned above.

agree kinda...the 1ds2 is damn good. if the 5D3 has a 7Dish AF system (or better) i might replace.

I know exactly what you mean. I have carried my 1Ds2 and 16-35LII,50L&85L in two months trip w/ 2 kids - no problem. I have more steady shots with heavier body & lighter lens than the other way around.
