p.1 #1 · Wind Blown Clouds + Request and Question

The question - I need some solution for keeping my feet and lower legs dry when shooting the ocean this time of year. Do any of you know of a lightweight but warm solution. I don't want waders because if they get full of water - I could get hauled out to sea!!

The request - I would really love a sub-forum to the landscape forum to ask questions, discuss techniques/printing issues, etc as they pertain to landscape photography specifically. I know they do this in the wedding forum and I would love to be able to do this here. I realize there are other forums (General Gear/Printing, Processing, Etc.) but I think we would all love to have the ability to talk about certain issues here, the way the wedding photographers do. Thanks for listening.

Hi Sharon,

While not a dry solution, a wet suit will keep you warm. Footwear is trickier, I suggest woolen socks and boat shoes. This is what many paddlers do.

Hey Sharon,

I imagine it's the cold this time of year you are dealing with? And no so much being wet? If so Morris has a good idea. Otherwise how about just using rain pants, and then Sealskin socks inside of water shoes. The Sealskin are water proof. Course if you are constantly standing knee deep in the water, you will still get wet, but that should help against the occassional wave that hits you.

A nice shot here. I love the clouds especially. I think the foreground with the beach is a bit weak though. The beach is too barren, and I am not a big fan of shooting sideways if you will across the water like that. I prefer to shoot into the water, then across it. I don't care for how the water slices off the scene this way.

Thanks Jim and Morris. I will check out your suggestions.

Jim, I agree about the pic. My husband didn't like it either. :-) But I wanted to ask a question so I posted it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

How deep do you get? I would have said waders, or hip boots. You can find them in neoprene that are quite light weight and water proof. Duck hunters love 'em.
I also like your idea for a Q&A for landscapers.
Love the sky here, but agree with Jim and Dirck otherwise.

I love the sky too. And how all the lines from grass, sand and water run towards the center and then the sky radiates out from there. The angle is good, maybe a bit more water and less sand would have been better.

Q&A section here would be great. The wedding forum discusses a lot of stuff which is a great source of information. I guess the landscape forum is generally a bit too busy for that, so yes, a sub forum would be a good way forward.

Hi Sharon,

I don't know how far you wade in but I love my Muck Boots. I have the tall ones and they come up to just under the knee. Light weight, comfortable and warm.

Hello Sharon, love the dramatic clouds. Since I don't get in the water, dry is not a problem, for warm, I wear ski pants, and put chemical shoe warmers in my shoes and pockets . Check out:

I can get pretty wet. Easily to mid thigh. In the winter, I try not to, but I can get absorbed and forget to run. :-) I'll look into the boots and waders. I've gotten yankeefied pretty much to the cold but I can't handle cold and wet.

sharon, i like your idea about questions about landscape photography - its a shame i have to go to the printing/post processing forum because sometimes you just want to ask other landscape photogs for their experience. although there are some very good people in the other forums, its just not what i'm looking for.

as for the boots, the sea moves to much and too unpredictable - i'd say waders is the best. anything shorter than that and you'll be sure to take water in.

Hey Sharon,

Yeah, I forgot about the the question part of your post here. And your idea of a sub-forum has been discussed before. It is a bit silly that we can't just ask a question huh?

But questions can be asked... you just have to post a photo and in the post ask the question... For instance if you are having questions about blending, then post an image that is causing you problems with blending... and ask the question... The nice thing about that anyway is others who are learning, who may not totally understand the question being asked, by seeing a photograph with a particular issue can then "see" what the question is. The same with printing for example... if there is an issue with printing a certain image, or type of image, by posting a shot it does help to see what the question pertains too.

I know that sometimes posts that simply ask a technical question do get moved to other forums, sometimes for good reasons. But sometimes the question is one that really does need to be answered by a Landscape photographer, and also is beneficial for other Landscape photographers to see. The solution is to simply email or PM Fred with this suggestion to either start a sub-forum, or to allow Non-Presentation questions to posted in here.

Hope that helps!

Jim

I'll send Fred a message, Jim.

Sometimes posting a picture just confuses the issue. I have some compositional questions about large prints that I would love to open a discussion about, but if I post a pic, it will all center around that particular picture when I am really more interested in a general discussion. I love how the wedding forum deals with a lot of the practical issues photography businesses have but they don't all apply to landscape photography.

Thanks for answering, Jim!

Sharon,

I have hip waders. Used to wear them fishing, not at the beach.

At the best of times they are cumbersome. Difficult to walk in. All it takes is a small edge of overflow and they fill up so fast it’s hard to believe. And then they are so heavy it's hard to pick up your feet.

Seems to me this could be a recipe for disaster in a rip tide. Not sure if Nantucket has rip tides, but we sure do and pretty often too, even when it’s not obviously stormy weather, along the Gulf coast.

I have no doubt a wet suit would be more expensive, but my son, who surfed in the Pacific wearing one, told me they do a great job of keeping out the cold.

Can’t say I care for this image. It looks as if someone has drawn a big zero in the clouds and is otherwise soft focus. Sorry. Not so long ago you posted a series of shots. One had a group of shore birds on the edge of the water. I thought it was really beautiful.

Hope you find a solution for wet shooting.

Patrice

Good idea with a sub forum, Sharon. Besides this would improve my English/American-knowledge and - of course - my photografic skills?

I wear waterproof pants (from LLBeans) and rubber boots. The waterproof pants have a cuff at the bottom and I pull them over the rubber boots so that the tops don't have "access" to water. I stay pretty dry. That and fleece socks to keep my feet warm.

Not hip boots; waders. You can cinch a belt around your waist so that even if water got over the top, it wouldn't fill the waders. There are boot-foot and stocking-foot waders. The boot-foot ones have the boot as part of the waders; the stocking-foot ones require boots over them. For sandy beaches, boot-foot would probably be better. You can learn about all the choices on some fishing/outdoor gear sites. I'd try LL Bean, Cabela's, and Dan Bailey's Fly Shop for starters.

Thanks, Ernie. I like the belt around the waist option as that part worried me.

Depends how deep you want to wade. Don H uses overboots called Neos, which fit over your entire regular footwear. They work well, but are only knee high. Another very simple solution I have tried, and can give you a mild recommendation for. Wear the sandals for water use (some have toes, and some not..like Tevas) and put on 1-2mil neoprene socks (around $12 from Cabellas (order them a bit small) and coated nylon rain pants. A couple of velcro straps in a few places and the whole thing is almost waterproof. What leaks in wont circulate much, and you will get wet but stay pretty warm. Kind of a poor man's dry suit. My experience from surfing is that wet neoprene and wind equals very cold people. We always got in the water out of the wind to keep warm. you could pay $ for a dry suit, but the damn ocean is a dangerous place for the busy photog. Also better to keep your companion not shooting and spotting for you. My kluge rig will cost you about $50.

BTW, nice shot, but I agree with Jim on negative space in the left foreground.

I do worry about the safety aspect as I tend to absorbed. I shoot by myself quite a bit so I try not to get carried away, figuratively and literally. I think I will try the neoprene socks in my storm chaser boots and the rain pants. I'm never too far from home here.

Thanks for all the feedback. It is much appreciated.
