p.1 #1 · 39¢ Radio Popper PX Mount Fix

This weekend my assistant broke my Radio Popper PX Mount #2 and #3 without really abusing them. Ok fine I broke 1 of them. When I first purchased the mounts they were at the introductory price of $10 which by the time I had to purchase the 3rd one (because the hotshoe snapped) the price had doubled. Instead of purchasing them again I have come up with a DIY solution to the extremely flimsy thin plastic hot shoe mount. Radio Popper thinks these things can hold the weight of a 580 EX II speedlite through everyday professional wear and tear but I have a feeling that most of them will break at some point, usually in front of client. I spent a decent amount of time trying to get my poppers taped in just the right spot to continue my shooting the day they broke.

Here is the broken hot shoe on my Radio Popper PX Mount. See how thin the plastic is?

The only thing I needed to purchase was a 39¢ 1 inch long 1/4 inch machine head bolt.

There is a pilot hole already in the mount that will start off the 1/4 inch hole that needs to be drilled.

Now put the bolt in through the bottom of the mount.

Now just screw on a typical cold shoe.

Next screw in the 1/4 inch stud into the bottom of the mount.

Now here is where you can make a mistake - I use 580 EX II as my off camera strobes. The Popper will no longer slide into the appropriate slot for that model. You now have to mount it 1 spot down. Put it on the slot for the regular 580 EX.

Here is the a shot of the whole fix. The strobe fires!

So far there are 2 Radio Popper mounts in the world with this fix. It feels pretty sturdy so far and I have a feeling it will hold up over time.

Good job. BTW, the Calumet umbrella adapters are considerably better than the Impact models. They've got notches along the main collar joint so if it loosens somehow, it still stays up from its spring.

Thanks for this. I will try this out. In about 8 months I broke 2 mounts already. Both mount broke at the same spot.. which is same as yours.

(I know this is a old thread.. I found it, when I googled for Radio popper mount. Thought it will be useful to bring it up, because I am sure many might have broken these flimsy plastic things)

I complained about the mount to RP guys. I got a reply from them and they sent a replacement mount, which is supposed to be better than the one I had.

I didn't see any visible difference.. I will give it a try.

Just found this and wanted to say thanks. I've gone through 2 mounts (the 1st relacement courtesy of RP), but am almost scared to handle them after this experience. Not how you want to feel with "professional" gear. I mostly reach for the Normans now b/c of their durability over my flimsy RPS...
