p.1 #1 · Issue with my 70-200 f4 IS??? Plz help

Alright, so I got an amazing lens a few weeks ago. Shot with it once, then put it on my camera (5d mk2 - which at the time was mounted with an OEM grip) and the IS changed it's "Tune". Now, instead of a fast-tracking IS focus-assist, it sounds like something is spinning inside there non-stop for about 5-7 seconds - after releasing shutter - then stops.

Can anyone tell me what may be wrong and what I should do?

I got the lens used, so I can't return it, plus it WAS working. Can it be something with the OEM Grip that caused an overload in the IS circuit I'm afraid to use it again with my 24-105 now.

If anyone can help - it would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure it's not the normal functioning IS which can make a spinning noise.

If you really have issues just have it checked at a service center. Did the original warranty expire already?

Did you mount the lens with the camera ON?

If so, that might have caused the problem. With IS lenses you have to turn the camera off when mounting/unmounting the lens because you can damage the IS mechanism.

I don't have IS lenses anymore, and sometimes I do not turn the camera off when swapping lenses, but even now, whenever I can, I do turn the camera off. When I had the 70-200 IS and 24-105 IS I always had the camera turned off when swapping them.

As a side note, the 70-200 f/4 L IS is making a more noticeable noise. Also whem the IS starts and stops there is an odd sound. There is nothing wrong with it. Are you sure it's 5-7 seconds and not something like 3-4 seconds?

Adimage,

I'll take a closer look in the morning in terms of time of the whirring noise.

As far as shutting off the camera - I do it religiously with EVERY lens, as I've been told that this is good practice to prevent dust from being attracted to the charged sensor.

I'm just concerned cause this is NOT like my 24-105....

I guess the trick would be to test it, huh? I was just so scared that i broke it, that i'm terrified to touch it again lol

good night for now

The 70-200 sound is stronger than that of the 24-105's. I had both and the 24-105 was near silent, while the 70-200 was quite audible. However, the IS on the 70-200 is more efficient, so that's acceptable.

yeah with my 24-105 you can hardly tell its working but my 70-300 IS you can hear it easily.
What you need to work out is if its actually doing its IS thing. set it to 200 and hold down the shutter button and view thru the VF and then release the shutter button, you should after a couple of seconds see the VF jump and then be noticably shakier

Not true!

I just checked the manual for my 70-200/2.8L IS and it doesn't say anything about turning off the camera before changing lenses, but it does warn about condensation when coming in from the cold. The first paragraph under Mounting and Detaching the Lens says "See your camera's instructions for details on mounting and detaching the lens". Neither the 1DII or 5D manual says anything about turning off the camera before switching lenses.

The only time I try to remember to shut off my cameras on purpose is when I want to synch with a PC using the USB or firewire connection, and that's just so I know when the app should start, not because it's needed for camera or lens health & safety. None of my IS lenses have ever had a problem due to swapping lenses with the body turned on.

Well, I think that it's OK, because it does seem to be working as you guys stated.
Whirs for about 3 seconds after letting go of shutter. When not making the sound, image is a lot shakier than with.

I guess that I was just really scared by the fact that the IS was THAT MUCH LOUDER...

I've never used someone else's large lens w IS, so didn't have a refernce point other than my 24-105 which is super fast and rather quiet.

I appreciate all the input guys!
