How do you say the aperture of your lens? Do you always use the same nomenclature when describing it or do you say 'One-Point-Four' and 'Five-Six' (i.e. it changes)?

Just curious to see how it's done...

The point is practically necessary. Otherwise 1.4 could be confused with 14, etc. It is more important if the radio reception is not the best and when working in a multilingual/multicultural environment.

This is a different question for a change....

I say one point four but may say one four at times... If I did say one four I would say "wide open at one four" or "open all the way up to one four".... come to think of it the only one I usually remove the point from is five six...

Sorry - I should have stated that the 'F' is implied. After you say 'F' how would you state it.

'five six'

I often don't bother to say the preceding 'Eff.' That's strongly implied and is really unnecessary.

If the conversation was more formal, like the radio communication someone mentioned, I'd probably throw in the 'Eff' and a 'point.'

I sometimes say 'fifty six' just to see if whoever asked is really paying attention.

It sounds better put into context. IE a friend asks what Im shooting. My reply:

"One-eighty, one hundred, eff two eight, eye-z-o one hundred"

180mm, 1/100, f/2.8, ISO100.

Must sound cryptic to others listening.

When I Say,

F {Number} {Dot} {Number}

When I write,

Uppercase F => F2.8
Lowercase f => f/2.8 ( "/" between f and number)

"Point" as in "F over five point six" for example.

I usually say "Eff (number) point (number)", but when I talk fast, or very repetitively, or to someone who I talk to a lot about photography, I will sometimes say "Eff (number)(number)", as in "yeah, the eighteen two hundred is a three five five six lens", or "the eighty four hundred is slow not only because it takes 2 days for its Aye Eff to lock onto something stationary, it's also only four five five six."

However, I don't think I do that for apertures that are larger than f/3.5, so for f/2.8, or f/1.4, I would always say "Eff one point four", never "Eff one four".

Interesting, huh?
