p.1 #1 · Trying My Hand at Impressionism

The recent influx of Impressionism photographs have inspired me to try the same. So I researched techniques and found that camera movement during the shot as well as several shots blended were some methods. Granted, these are not the best subject matter. In fact, they are all the same subject. I was just trying different methods.

So, do these work as Impressions?

Thanks

1) Up and down movement as well as zoom during the same single shot.

2) Zoom only during shot.

3) 5 shots at different focuses and added some Dilation. Also messed with opacity for each layer.

Hey John

Kudos for trying different techniques, really like the abstract feel these present. For me #2 works the best like that look and feel of motion blur.

p.1 #3 · Trying My Hand at Impressionism

Hi John, I am almost afraid to comment on these as I have been screamed at a few times on here for voicing an opinion trying to help others improve these types of photos. So please do take my comments here as trying to help and not as critisism.

1. The first one is a bit to blurred and a bit to cluttered. I found it best to use one technique at a time to begin with. When using the up and down camera movement....it usually works out better just to go in one direction. Both directions can work on the right subjects but that technique takes longer to perfect....lots and lots of practice or just plain luck.

2. Your second photo is a nice zoom explosion....practice timing on these. You will be able to get more detail or less, depending on what you want in your photo.

3. Okay this one is hard on my eyes. I have lots of these ones too....so don't take that as an insult. An easier way to get this effect is to put your camera on a tripod, slow shutter speed...then zoom, stop, zoom, stop.....up to how many times the shutter speed will allow you. This will give less of this kind of blur and more focus while showing this type of style.

I hope I did not insult you.....my intent was to make suggestions to help you improve these techniques. Hope to see more of your impressionistic photos, as you practice with more of these.

Y

Ray - Thanks for looking and commenting. I figure, hey, why not try to hone another skill with the ol' digital

Y- No insult taken. I value your opinion as well as all others. I appreciate your words of wisdom on this subject matter. I didn't think of the stop zoom stop zoom method. I'm going to try that. Thanks for the tip. It sounds like I'm on the right track and it comes with practice, practice, practice.

Bihn - Here is a brightened version of #1. Thanks for looking!

Good attempts here and like your direction. I think 1 is a bit too busy underneath...meaning the base comp needs some work but the idea is there. 2 and 3 are good starts. think more detail in 2 would be nice (middle area). maybe putting that exposure over a normal base one...
3rd...looooots of potential. like that technique a lot. Very paintery. Though needs some contrast and pop overall. Keep working it!
