Well... I think in Adobe-speak, a release candidate is a step above "beta." Lightroom 3 is in "beta," which to them means that the catalog changes will not migrate to the "official" or "release candidate" releases.
This version is interoperable with current and future catalogs. Agree that it is not the "final" version.

Aah, I see. Thanks, Ryan. It appears that the release of the final version is immenent, huh? Probably a matter of days, rather than weeks...

My guess would still probably be weeks. But Adobe 3 is likely months away.

sometimes the RC is the final anyway
the last couple RC I downloaded never even updated when the final came out and all the file sizes were the same size and date stamp

The RC will likely be the final 2.6 version unless there is some devastating issue that gets discovered with the RC (hence the name release candidate ).
