Where is the s/n on the 85 f1.8 I was documenting the s/n's on my equipment when I came across an oddity...the ONLY one of my 12 Canon lenses without a s/n is the 85 f1.8. I know that some lenses have it inscribed on the rear mount & others have it on the barrel but for the life of me, I can't find it on the 85. Does anyone else have any Canon lens with a missing s/n?

It may be black ink printed on the black plastic. Try using different angles of light.
OMG, I can't believe it! Yes, it's there alright...printed with the absolute faintest ink I've ever (barely) seen! Geez, I looked at it the first time under a halogen desk lamp & didn't see it. It is barely discernable under the strongest light and only at certain angles!
Thanks 'Dudewithoutape', can I send you a roll or two of tape in gratitude?
Would not say that the 85 1.8 is a cheapie, not all are stamped either. This glass might not be as expensive as L glass but is just as sharp and an excellent value for the money. On the other hand canon is moving towards stamping on many of their lenses, any the new L lenses that have polycarbonite bodies in the future may also have the stamping
Actually the 85 1.8 USM is as made as well some L glass and better than a few. Certainly whips the EF 100-300 5.6L and 50-200 3.5-4.5L for build quality. And is pretty close to my 200 2.8L and 24-105 L.
Some clown on B&S was demanding the SN on my 85 1.8 (I thought he might be some kind of a scammer) and I couldn't find the damn number anywhere, so I sold it an hour later to someone whom didn't care about SN.

yours is printed Mine is stamped,
2565 are the last 4.Mine is on the black plastic at the end of the lens. If you're looking at the lens contacts, look on the other side of the circle for them.

Yes, it's printed not stamped on the black plastic on the mount. I have a couple other lenses that are stamped in the same location but this one is most definately stamped.
Mine is also stamped, not printed. Relatively easy to see.
On L lenses, the serial number is engraved and painted in black. On white lenses, it is located on the bottom of the barrel near the mount. On black lenses, it is located on the mount itself.
As for the date code, all L lenses have one. Some are stamped, others are printed in white.
All my L lenses are coded UW or UX. I'm curious, though, if anyone has a lens that is not assembled in the Utsunomiya facility.
I had the same problem with my 50mm 1.4, which for the last seven years I thought had no visible serial number, until, like the original poster here, I discovered an almost indiscernible black on black number on the back of the lens. I mean, I've been looking for this for years and never saw it even with reading glasses and a bright light.
Just looked at mine - it is stamped as well. I bought it second-hand, so I don't know how old it is - perhaps just the older lenses are stamped, new ones printed?

Haha Thanks. Just glad to have helped.
Funny story actually, my email is Dudewithoutapet at gmail. I was signing up for this website a few weeks ago thinking I'd go for the same SN, but I didn't notice the character limit and how it cut off the "t" until it was too late.
