p.1 #1 · 2nd Mac Monitor

I am looking to add a 2nd monitor with my first one being an Apple 20" LCD display that is about 5 years old.

I'd like something in the 22" range and was wondering if any of the displays in the $200 range are adequate for photo work. My Apple will be the primary display for photo work with the 2nd monitor being for pallets, window, Safari etc.

Any recommendations at this price point?

Dell 2209WA (make *sure* it's the WA version), usually found on their small business section.

well, for what you described, you can use pretty much any monitor. for colour-critical work you'll need a bigger budget...

nonsense. there is a difference in displays and everyone knows it. 'any' monitor ain't gonna cut it but there *isn't* a requirement to blow $1200+ to get good/very good results.

is it as good as an NEC, Eizo ? Nope.

you simply cannot beat the 2209WA at that price point.

For the price, that is the way to go. If the budget permits, brands like Eizo, LaCie and NEC and even some HP displays are all superior but at a much much higher cost.

Most people can't even distinguish color at the level of accuracy that would justify a $1000-$2000 monitor anyhow. (Even people without a color "blindness" still may not have full color perception. And if you are a male, your chances are even higher.)

Look for an IPS monitor. The Dell 2209WA is an IPS, and is probably the best bang for the buck around.

Thanks all. Is the Dell unit available under another manufacturer. I know Dell does a lot of re-badging of other companies products.

Consider that, at $200, your monitor calibrator many cost more than your monitor(s). Sad to say.

Too true. I would not spend more than $500 on a 22" or 23" display. The diminished returns do not, in my experience, justify the added price. I use a Dell 23" display; I'll have to get the exact product number when I get back to my workstation, but I think it cost somewhere in the $300 range. I find it to be quite adequate.
