Wedding: 03/13/2010
Location: Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Budget: $2000 max including travel fees
Just trying to help a friend for her wedding in Jamaica. She already booked a photographer but for some reason she wants to have another shooter for her wedding. Her budget is somewhat max out to $2,000 and that is with the coverage and travel included. I am not sure if this reasonable but I am sure it will be a great addition into your portfolio.
Send me a PM or post here your email and rates. I will give her all the information tomorrow by 6pm.
I agree with Pat that for the working photographer this is probably not a great deal. However, I know some newer person is going to jump at this opportunity and they ought to be aware of the ramifications. If the resort provides a photographer then in many cases they are pretty strict about allowing any outside person to come in and photograph anything. Now I often doubt the worries about work permits and that type of thing, but this is exactly the kind of situation that can get sticky for the unassuming photographer out to build a portfolio. Seller beware?? No offense intended though, Ian, I can tell that you're just trying to help a friend and provide an opportunity.
That is fine, TRReichman. As a pro photographer myself, I anticipated such response. This gig is certainly not for the working pros.. but for someone who would want to add something or build something..
I am just trying to get information to all interested photogs. After this, everything will be up to her.. in other words, you will be dealing with her when she contacts you.
I assume when you say 'including travel fees' you mean the hotel as well, yes? I wouldn't be surprised if someone would be -out- money shooting for $2k, unless they're from Jamaica.
Normal rate + travel fees + per diem (if not all inclusive) at the very least is what a photog should charge. Unless you're making it a highly rewarding family vacation, it's not worth it.
Resorts who supply photographers generally do not allow 2nd pro shooters who are not booked directly by them. I think your friend needs to check out the details with the resort in addition to the silly funny budget $.
Jamaica is pretty expensive to stay. Flight,hotel,visa/airport,taxi can easily add up to about $1500. Many hotels also have strict policies on outside photographers/guests. Some don't allow at all and some can charge upward $300/day for a day fee.
If $2000 is all you are getting for all of that, that may be a bit low and that's not because it's free, but because it may end up costing you more. Then you'd have to deal with the hired photographer. If I was the 1st photographer, I wouldn't let you shoot anything except formals
Hmmm.... I'm surprised to here that so many of you have had bad experiences with resorts. We shot a wedding in Mexico and they didn't care at all. The resort provided a photographer during the ceremony but that was it.
Beautiful shots RichardLavigne.
I guess I am naive but I wouldn't think the resort photographer would care that much - don't they often supply the couples with a set package as part of the wedding? It wouldn't seem to eat in to their revenue as most printing would be done locally with a CD provided by the resort.
I think more information is needed. If I could get it to work out where I could bring my husband AND come out even - including food - it wouldn't be bad for an extended weekend vacation. We've always wanted to go to Jamaica. But this sounds like more of a headache and I don't think we could come out even. Is there a way to contact the resort - find out fees, shooting rules, etc?

Thank you. Yes, the resort supplied a photographer and it was all part of the wedding package, so they didn't seem to care at all. The resort supplied I think 40 prints as part of the package and put them in an album. The resort photographer only shot the ceremony. You can see that we shot the getting ready process, the dinner and the reception.
Price is reasonable for my circumstances, I am fairly new to solo weddings but have tons of experience second shooting.
Let me know if you still need someone.
edit: Ian, should I contact you or her directly?
She would be paying upfront with a contract right? no shady business. Plus I would need the money at least a couple months in advance so I could pay for my flight and hotel.
