I have a 52mm drop-in polarizing filter to use with my long lenses. I've never used it. I'm always wanting all of the shutter speed that I can get so I don't use the filter.
Does anyone here use theirs in the ong lens? Thanks
The only times I have used a polarizer was when I shot seals and whales with the sun glistening on them. The polarizer helped to cut the reflection from their wet bodies to a great extent.
And yes I do refrain from using them otherwise as the shutter speed is all that matters for me for wildlife.
They are great for ducks and animals in and around the water. They can even take the glare off animals and objects. I think they are underused because you don't need much shutter speed when the sun is high in the sky where the polarizer would make the difference and be useable anyways. You usually use the polarizer during decent sun...
Sometimes you want to lower the SS and still shoot wide open (ie airplane and helicopter propellers) - that's when I use mine. In fact, I often put an 8x ND filter in so that I can shoot at f2.8, 1/60th and iso50 during daylight shooting. That way you get a nice, natural blade blur and good bokeh at the same time.

Does anyone happen to know if I can get a ND filter for a 400 2.8 Mark 1? It has the drop in rear gel filter, but I don't know how to put a different filter in it.

Hey Will,
If the MKI is like the MKII then you have to buy a seperate filter holder that allows for 52mm filters to be screwed into it. It's really expensive to get these filters. I have a circular polarizer and a screw in 52mm with a couple of ND filters and I think it was around $300 for everything
