p.1 #1 · Wireless Triggers for Canon

Can you recommend what you use for wireless or non-wireless transmitters? I have a Canon 5DMk2 and do not have anything yet (used to use the old screw in extension triggers on my old cameras). I don't have a flash and shouldn't need one anytime soon since I am a landscape shooter. I think I've seen that many of the wireless transmitters work flash and trigger?

I also think I saw some that were sold on Ebay for pretty cheap. Looking for thoughts about any price range although I would like to stay under $100 for something that works. Recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

you just want to fire the camera?
cheapes wirless for canon is th IR1 which is a little IR trigger. it does not have much range but it works well enough.
You can also get the cable realease (canon or cheap ebay knock off)
Or you can get a load of cheap ebay wirless units that work well enough over a good range.
Just search ebay there are loads

It sounds to me like you are looking for a remote shutter release. Is that correct? If that is so there are plenty available on the market for $30-40 on ebay. They plug into the release port on the side of you 5DMK2. Most of them simulate pressing the shutter button. So you can half press the remote to activate focus, or press, hold, and release to handle bulb mode. I use a wireless model and it works up to 100 meters from the camera.

Regarding flash, if there is a flash on the camera (or controlled remotely by the camera), it would be triggered the same as if you pressed the shutter release with your finger.

I have units from Yongnu (I think) and Cactus. Both work fine, and I am sure that there are other brands that work fine. Just make sure you get the one with the correct plug. The one you want has a plug with 3 holes and fits the 20/30/40/50/1xx and 5xx bodies. The one you do NOT want fits the XT/XTi, etc and looks like a headphone jack.

My units are dual purpose. The receiver has a button that releases the shutter. This lets you use the receiver as a traditional cable release when you are standing next to the camera.

Yes the RF-602 acts as a flash transmitter/receiver and remote shutter release. I have a set and love them.

i second the yongnuo RF-602 recommendation. i originally bought a set of those for just dorking around, but they proved so reliable that i reach for those before my skyports.

you can use them as a radio cable release remote, or a flash trigger - as a sender or receiver. pretty cool.

I just got a set as well. (I needed them because I want to trigger a couple of 430EX's off camera with my 5D II now that I ditched the 7D which has wireless control. But I was hoping to use them on Alien Bee's in the studio as well.) They're nice units but I already had a cheaper 16 channel ebay RF triggers and I can consistently get 1/160th on my 5D II triggering my AB strobes with those, whereas with the RF-602 one out of every 4-5 frames at 1/160th shows some shutter (blackening of the edge of the frame). I'd have to shoot at 1/125th to get consistently clear frames with the RF-602's on my 5D II. I know some people will have a different opinion, but this hinders my use of my 135L and even 70-200 F4 IS at the long end - I notice some camera shake every now and then even though the flash duration is (much) faster than 1/125th.

FYI - I just picked up a 270EX and like the larger Speedlites it has a manual setting via the in-camera menu. This eliminated the pre-flash allowing you to use the 270EX to trigger your studio strobes via the optical slave if you need that. And there's no issue syncing at 1/200th, the max X-sync on the 5D II. Problem with the 270EX is there is no high speed sync so you're basically stuck at whatever your max X-sync shutter speed is, limiting it's usefulness for outdoor daylight fill flash.
