That's because it simply doesn't light up. The viewfinder lights up when you change AF points and it will light up when it locks focus if you are in one-shot mode.

I still can't get the red to light up in AI Servo, it does in 1 shot.
That's because the "red blink" has, since the 1990 EOS 10S, indicated an AF lock. AI servo, by nature, never locks on a target. Instead it is always actively focusing, hence no red blinky.

The 40D and 50D give a single red blink of the selected point when AF starts so that you know which is active. With the new display that doesn't even show an inactive point I suppose this blink is not necessary.
It really bugged me when I first got the camera and was playing with it in the living room but I have to admit that it has never been an issue when I was actually out shooting. Part of that is because of using dual AF start buttons and the fact that the viewfinder blinks when the focus point changes. A quick tap on the * button which is slaved to the registered AF point gives me a blink in case I need to see where the points are against a dark background.
I have had a 30d 40d and 50d, and they all blinked, regardless. I was using the 1d3 last week on manual focus, and forgot to turn the AF back on, and lost some frames because it does not blink. It was fairly dark, hard to see those little black squares against a dark background.
Isn't there a black square that shows you where the focus point is set? I shot some football last weekend w/ a 7D (5 games, thought it was a pretty good test). I'm used to a 1D** but found the 7D a lot easier to use than a 40/50D when using the "black Square". I d On the 40/50D the red blinkie doesn't stay on like the 1D's do....
Yeah, totally got used to that with my 1D Mark II. So it sounds like there is no way for it to turn red... I think even my 5D initially lights up bright when focus is initially locked and then is still lit up lighter in Servo. I think. Could be nuts. Got so used to the Mark II. The black focus point can be difficult shooting football at night.
