p.1 #1 · 14-24/17TS/21ZE/24TS in a church

Yesterday I took some pictures of a local church. It was a good possibility to compare my wide angle lenses in a real situation. All picture weres taken at f/11 and both TS lenses were nearly fully shifted. The camera was a 5D II. Regarding the quality there is not much difference between the 14-24mm, the 17mm TSE, the 21mm ZE and the 24mm TSE II in this situation (in contrast to brick wall tests at f/2.8-4.0):

14-24mm@14mm:

Well, I can't say I'm surprised.

Happy shooting
Yakim.

That 17 TSE is .... WOW. All of the pieces of glass you showed here give lots of EOSfun, but that widest TSE is an interesting challenge for the photographers creativity like no other wide lens. Your full shift shot of the ceiling is a great example of the possibilities of a super wide tilt and shift. Thanks for sharing this interesting comparison

Thank you for the comparison, Boris. The conclusion would be.... at that aperture, it doesn't matter what lens you use, correct ? But I am impressed with both TS-E lenses, even shifted that much

I really am beginning to like that 17 TSE. I had the original 24 though, and hardly used it. I'm not convinced that I'd get much use out of the 17 either. It would certainly make a nice interior/archetecture lens, and would be useful on a cropper as well as on full frame.

Nice series. Thanks for posting.

The 17 TSE does look impressive but the 21 ZE doesn't look bad either at $1000 less. The real question for me however is; How would my 16-35 2.8L Mark 1 do in this group. Probably not that bad at f/11.

My ex 16-35 mk1 would be completely crushed by my 17TSE even at f11, especially if you look off center.

Blimey! No recession hitting that church! The 17 TS-E photo is simply incredible.

Well then it depends on whether you think the extra wideness of the 17mm focal length and the Tilt/Shift capability is worth $1000.

Thanks Stan. Of course I say "probably not that bad" as a way of telling myself that it's probably good enough for me, for now, and I won't have to worry about shelling out the dollars for one of these wonders. As you know I'm also considering the 24 1.4L II. I am taking my time in making this decision but hope to have wide prime in my bag before a trip in the spring.

Interesting that the 17 is wider than the 14-24 shot, based on the 5th side windows in view. Are you sure the 14-24 shot was really at 14?

Well it depends on what you need I have the 24L2 as well, and love it. The original 24L was my favorite lens for more than a decade, and the 24L2 is a worthy replacement (unlike the whole 16-35 upgrade ). I'd say it greatly depends on what you need - I have the 24L not for super sharp images but rather for low light work wide open or close to that. I think if you can put the camera on a tripod then most lenses will do fine at f11 - some may do better than others, but by and large they will be all good. I don't have the TSEs for their sharpness but more for the shifting. I had the 24TSE (mk1) as well, and while it didn't scream "pixel peep me!" on the 1Ds3 it was certainly a great lens for its purpose. The new ones are just better

Yes, but I changed the position of the tripod between the shots.

Regard the quality: yes. But regarding the composition the shift-function is quite helpfull in this situation.

Even at f/11 you would see the difference. I had the 16-35 and sold it, because I was not satisfied with the quality.
