You guys know that I shoot only primes. However, I am getting older and that weight just isn't cutting it for me anymore. So into the world of ZOOMS!!!

Now I am looking at the 28-70 and the 24-70. The price difference is about $500 and I have to ask...is the 24-70 worth the extra $500??

What primes do you have in that range at the moment? Surely they're not going to be as heavy combined as a 24-70?

The 24-70 isn't exactly a light lens if you're doing this for weight savings.
But it is my go to lens for 80-90% of my shots.

i like 28-70 more than 24-70. If you would not miss the wide end, go for older one.
I agree that you are not going to save on weight if it will not replace at least three pro lenses. Also keep in mind that while with new bodies f2.8 is often fast enough, DOF you will not cheat.

Haven't used the 24-105, but if someone can show me a better Nikon mid-range zoom than the 24-70, I'd appreciate it. I put my 28-70 up for sale after taking 5 shots with the 24-70. I believe the NANO coating has a lot to do with the richness of colors you get with this lens. If you can afford it, you wil not regret it.

Yes. I have the 17-35/35-70 f2.8s and happy as I am with them....the 24-70 is in a completely different league.

Did a side by side with my 28-70 and sold it shortly after. Amazing lens, Nikon really got this sucker right!

The 24-70 is along the lines of Ziess glass IMO.

I don't like zooms much, but I don't want to be messing with primes on both bodies while shooting, so its needed for me.

One thought, the 24-70 is not light by any means.

I am aware that it is not light...however, I have a LOT of lenses...for most weddings I am switching between the 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm. Since I need them close, I am also lugging the 180mm and 300mm with the rest of the kit... If I had the zoom...I could just let the bag sit

I guess you're in the wrong forum.

But i like the Nikon 24-70 over the Canon 24-74 and over the Canon 24-105. I had all three of them.

I was using the 20, 35, 50 and 85 combination for weddings along with the 180.
I traded the 20mm for the 12-24 F4AFSG. Then I sold the 85 and 180 and I got the 105DC.
Currently, 12-24, 35, 50, 105 is my wedding kit.

+1 One of the reasons I made the switch to Nikon was the 24-70 blows the canon model out of the water! But on the other hand I do miss the Canon 70-200 f4

I've had a 28-70mm f/2.8L & a 24-70mm f/2.8L, and while the 28-70 was a great lens my 24-70 is much better in comparasion. I'm now carrying a 24-70 on one camera and a 70-200 2.8L IS on the other with no regrets.

I have both lens, unfortunately I don't have apple to apple comparison.
My D3 most of the time use 24-70 while my 28-105 most of the time at my D70S (was D2X previously).

What I can say, I'm always step-down to 5.6 to 11 only use full-wide open if necessary.

The 28-105 has one weakness, where if you are zooming, the inner barrel will rotate.
If you attach PL filter, you need to re-adjust after you zoom-in or out.
The 24-70 has weight weakness, especially if you have weak left hand (I got an accident on my left wrist after I have 24-70).

Most of the people use 28-105 as a travel lens, smaller and lighter compare to 18-200.

I ran the 28-80 and 24-70 for a year. The 24-70 is sharper, has better colors, is just a great lens for weddings. The 28-70 is kinder to skin; great portrait lens on DX. I am moving toward an all FX system and recently sold the 28-70 because of cash needs. They are two different lenses for different uses. If you do portraits mainly, the 28-70 is the best. For all around use, go for the 24-70.

How are they different lenses for different uses? One replaced the other. Both are 2.8, and both have nearly identical focal lengths. Of course there are other differences, but I would imagine most users could use the 28-70 for any application that the 24-70 excelled in, and vice versa.
