The presets may seem like a steep entry point but extremely valuable IMO in cases like yours (and mine) when you don't know where to start. Me personally if I use a preset I inspect carefully WHAT was changed to create said look and then adjust to taste. I have found that combining a few makes black and whites how I want and because I know what was changed to make it that way, i can adjust it however I want.

I'm personally hoping my awesome freecell skills will suddenly come in handy one day.
