Hello everyone, I have a quick question.

I will be attending an event next weekend in Vegas where I will be shooting Karting thru the fence and would like some input and pointers on how to eliminate the cross hairs of the fence. I will be shooting with a 70-200mm F-4 L as well as a 300 F/4 L and would like to know how to shoot so I am not getting that hazy of the fence. I will be shooting during the day and would like to know what settings I would be able to start with.

Any pointers would greatly be appreciated as this is a once in a life time deal to see Michael Schumacher racing Karts.

I don't settings have anything to do with it. It really depends on where you are shooting through. If you are shooting through a fence and your lens is dead even with a intersection of fencelink then you'll have fence in your picture.

Unless you have a 2.8 lens wide open, the fence will come into play. Your best bet with the gear you have is to center your lens on an opening in the fence or get yourself in a location that you can shoot over the fence.

Thank you skyvan and Carl, I appreciate the info. I do plan on trying to shoot thru the opening of the fence as I have done before, but I thought there might be a trick or two that I might be able to try to get the best picture that I can with the equipment that I have.

What are some basic camera setting that I might be able to start from to get nice sharp images? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Again, I am a beginner and can use as much advice as possible. I am also planning on buying the 1D Mark IIn to shoot with after the event, but right I am shooting with the canon XTi so I am trying all that I can with this camera to produce the best possible pictures that I can.

I have the 70-200 f4 and find it is the perfect size to shoot through chain link fences. Just put the end of your lens right on the fence centered over an opening and shoot away. 99% of my shots with that lens have no fence in them.

Thanks ShirleyP - I have done that but I get a bit worried as there are others who are hanging onto the fence and tend to move it back and forth and I often get a bit worried about scratching my lens or filter that is on the front. I will have to find a spot where there are less people and hope for the best. Thanks for the reply and great advice.

Put the lens hood on and then put it as close as possible to the fence but centered on a hole. Shoot at wide open aperture (f4.0). Center focus point only and AI Servo focus mode. And there's nothing wrong with politely asking other people to please not make the fence move when you are trying to shoot through it.
